Taking the calipers off this weekend to clean them up. Might even get them and the carriers blasted before painting them and reassembly.

I’ve got new centre caps for the wheels here somewhere too.

The only advisory that this car got on it’s last MOT was corroded brake ferrules on the front brake flexi hoses.

Whilst it’s in bits and whilst we’re doing a brake fluid change it makes sense to change the brake hoses so these shiny bits arrived from Rimmer Bros today :)

I sealed the freshly refurbished wheels for the P38 the other day, today I cleaned the tyres with tyre shampoo and then put some silicon based tyre treatment on them.

I then though to myself that you can’t refit fresh wheels with manky wheel nuts so I polished each of them 1 by 1 today too.

We're getting there now. All brake hoses are replaced, the rear brakes are rebuilt but the arch liners aren't back in yet. I need to use some tar removed and get some treatment rubbed into them to clean them up properly.

Been doing some more tinkering with this car this weekend. The heater matrix was replaced almost exactly 12 months ago but it was leaking again. I’d tried nipping the bolt but it didn’t cure it so I decided enough was enough and tackled the job again.

This time I’ve gone for an Audi style core from Nissens.

Thankfully, there’s now no o-rings on it. I’ve removed the aluminium pipes and have run silicon hoses through the bulkhead. Thankfully the LPG system is tee’d into the coolant pipes just in front of the bulkhead so the silicon pipes don’t have to go far.

The old matrix hadn’t done 1000 miles and when I looked in it I saw this protruding and showing in the heater pipe connection.

It was rigid plastic that I couldn’t get out by hand so I grabbed it with a pair of pliers and pulled it.

It certainly wasn’t visible when the heater matrix was installed and I’ve never seen anything like it in a heater matrix before.

I’m going to replace the foam on top of the heater box tomorrow as well as fabricate a small bracket to hold the core into the box and then hopefully get most of it reassembled.

Foam on the heater box replaced today. Not my neatest job but it seals in the right places and is better then what was left when it was removed.

This car has had a new air con condenser and drier last week whilst it’s been in the shed so I put 10 bar of Nitrogen in the system.

After an hour we were down to 9 bar.

I soaked a few places with soapy water and sure enough found it leaking in exactly the same place as the other VSE that I had.

Looks like we need to order a couple more pipes for it now.

Can you point me to where you got that foam for the top of the heater core? I'm about to pull mine out and could do with something similar.

Hi jacckk, I made the same job earlier this year and I used open-cell foam used for car insulation. Any good car-audio shop could have it, or search online there are lots of options. No thicker than 5-6mm (even if the foam, being open cell, compresses).

Apologies, I’ve only just seen this post.

The foam we used came from eBay a long while back for something else and I decided to use it for this.

The Audi core has been fitted to this for a good few months now with no leaks and no issues thankfully. The P38 hasn’t needed anything for a long while now. I did have the steering box rebuilt by the same company who do them for Land Rover as there was a bit of wander in it. I fitted that in the summer and it improved it but didn’t sort it.

My L322 has been a summer project this year so once that was finished I had the P38 back inside this weekend and replaced all of the rubber bushes on it with genuine Land Rover ones and the difference it’s made to the car is superb. It’s really quietened it down over the bumps and has improved the handling too. Definitely a job worth doing. We’ve rebushed every P38 we’ve had now and it always makes a huge difference.

Just needs an exhaust now. Trying to decide what to do though. Does anyone know of a decent mild steel one that fits nicely without any major problems?

The last mild steel one I got was an Allmakes from Maltings Off Road but I've recently fitted a stainless rear section to mine as I was getting fed up with having to change the exhaust every 50-60,000 miles.....
