Ok, so Winter Camp never happened - mostly because I didn't organise it...

Between being away for work, and freezing over an engine swap (Thanks again Sloth for the extra help!) and freezing again to do a dash out/heater core swap in between 'real work' jobs, winter has (happily) seemed to have drifted past us.. nearly..

So turning thoughts to 'Summer Camp 2017'...

1) Who's interested in having another get together/working weekend?
2) If you are interested, then what would you like to get done to your RR?
3) If we get lots of people wanting to do the same thing (headlinings seem to be a theme already I think) then do we want to see if we can get any deals on bulk buying of parts etc?
4) Are we all happy to convene at my workshop again? There will only be the one indoor bay this year, as one of my restoration ones is inside and being pulled apart slowly... but if we are happy to roll it in/out, then we can free up the second one.
5) Yes, the disco is still where we left it 9 months ago...

For those who haven't heard of the camp before - you can get the idea from the title graphic for the forum - at best we ended up with about 8/9 P38's there (including my 2 restoration ones) - and got a few bits done, and had some good laughs and food cooked by our resident chef...

I'll start up with the task list... I'd like to get my headlining done, and hopefully 2 more done if we are doing a whole load - for my other P38's as they will need doing at some point, and the restoration needs to start somewhere!

So I'd be down for 1x Black headlining, and 2x Cream.
I'm also hoping to have my spare ABS modulator rebuilt by then, and possibly swap that over.
Otherwise, I'll be happy to help others out - especially with electrical issues...

  2. Headlining (lightstone) would be an obvious win for me. It's something I have a chance of being useful at. I'm sure something else will break or fall off in the meantime....
  3. I don't see why not :) Even if we don't get any special discounts we can buy in bulk.
  4. It seems ideal to me, in the absence of a fully equipped F1 garage with lifts. Unless anyone else has a suitable location they'd like to volunteer?

Would you like me to bring the Barbeque again? What are the chances of getting permission to camp in one of the nearby fields? I realise it might be taking things a bit far with your landlord but I've got a tent, there's a shower and the hotel wasn't exactly a riot. More money for parts...and maybe even beer ;)

Also.. Would it be worth buying a bulk load of engine/diff/gearbox/TC oils and swapping them all out? If there's somewhere to dispose of the waste oil we could actually save some money doing that. Also, the numpties amongst us could learn useful servicing. Y'know, people like me. Also maybe someone could demo how to change an airbag? It looks simple enough online but until I've done one I don't think I'll be driving into the Boonies on bags.

Headlining (whatever Martrim colour is closest to the Lightstone interior) will be at the top of my list, followed by whatever else craps out in the meantime. Using crystal ball I think fitting a SS exhaust might be somewhere in my future.
I'd volunteer my workshop, but given the pace that I'm building it at it would be more of a Which Summer Camp.
Camping??! Maybe, although I do have an aversion to sleeping in the great outdoors. More than happy to eat Morat's expertly grilled food though.
I'm thinking that your resto P38 in one bay won't be a problem. We'll just use your engine crane, sling a rope around Richard's car, drag it out and dump it outside. What could possibly go wrong?! :)

I'll (we'll) be there too as long as the chosen date doesn't clash with anything. I actually did a bit more dragging stuff around in preparation last weekend. Bloody heating oil tank sprung a leak so I had a new one to install. New one is smaller but still weighed 140kgs although lifting it on an engine crane got it into position easily enough. Getting the old one out involved a trolley jack, two long lengths of timber, a 5 tonne breaking strain towing strop and a P38......

OK, so that's 4 so far... and 5 headlinings to do..

The other p38 will roll if I pump some air into the tyres.. I'm tempted to get some manual inflation valves to lift it off the bump stops too..

Camping... not sure about that.. most of it is used. for their farming, and to be honest I don't have a lot of interaction with the landlord. Might the ok there cheap campsites around the Marlborough area if people want to do that..

Fluids etc.. I'm sure we can do a bulk buy
I'm not sure what the waste situation is, I have containers I have been collecting it in so far, but I should probably look at getting a drum and then when it's full of old oil, get it collected.

I have some taps for 20l containers, so makes it easy for distribution. A couple of measuring jugs and a funnel and sorted..

The disco can stay firmly where it is... Maybe we can turn it into a bbq stand...

Long way from Glasgow, but if (and it's a big if) that can be surmounted, then I'd quite like to come along, and most likely will still need a headlining doing too.
Could do fluids, I should manage to put a thousand miles on it after the oil change that's in progress just now, so it won't hurt to do it again.

Won't know till we got some dates together, only thing I need doing is lpg tune up, but I'm not to bothered, it works as is, switches over ok,, so not a major problem

Fair enough on the camping - it was a long shot but I bought a stupidly big tent on a whim last year and haven't used it yet! I might chuck it in the boot in case the weather isn't as kind as last year.

If it's anything like ours, they won't let you dump more than 5L. The men in orange overalls watch you like a hawk! Same with car bits. If they see you trying to trying to slip an old water pump or something into the scrap metal skip you are told to take anything car related to the local vehicle dismantlers!
Car waste now goes into my landfill wheely bin at home (obviously not liquids!) 'cos nearest dismantlers is 20 miles away and you can't get in without high-vis, hard hat, steelies and an orange flashing light on top of your car!
Water pumps and starter motors must cause havoc with the crusher in the back of the bin lorry, but they've never complained...

You can, but they do get grumpy if they reckon you're dumping commercial waste. I don't know what the score is near Marty but I suspect we might be regarded as taking the piss. Unless we go in a big convoy and drop one load each :)

When you look at the oil bank website, it shows Swindon HWRC as being a place to drop off used motor oil, from personal use.

I've never been there before to drop oil off, so don't know if there is a limit or not... 5L sounds pretty minimal, considering the engine oil change on a P38 on its own is 6L odd!

Might have to check it out, maybe take a 25L drum and see what they say... if the protest I can just say that it's from one full service on my vehicle. Engine oil, transmission, difficult, transfer case must add up to near 25L....

Tried to get rid of some interior plastics at my tip a while back... literally just bits of plastic, exactly the same kind of plastics you find in household items... They said I'd have to take it to a dismantler too!

So took it all home, smashed it all up, and in the wheelie bin it went...

Apparently Coolant is even more difficult to get rid of, which is a shame as mine needs a good flush seeing as it's half green half OAT at the moment :(

Coolant is easy, bung it down the loo in non-commercial quantities (as long as you are mains drainage, not a good idea if you have a sesspit).
