That looks a lot happier. They really had been tortured. As soon as the CVC gets back from the bodyshop I've got to replace the lines that run on top of the rear chassis rail which looks to be a very tight fit.

Thanks Gordon. I should just pay more attention.
Thank you for hosting the whole thing anyway. It's an invaluable asset. Nothing like it elsewhere.
Best wishes, David

I had a quick look around but couldn't see any way of getting an email notification if someone replies to a post. I've been very slow responding to a couple of replies. Is this feasible or too much of a problem for the system?
Thanks, David

Thanks ODB I'll try that tomorrow. Sorry to be slow responding.

Don't know if these help Richard.

P A Blanchard are showing stock at £1.97

Well, inspired by Dhallworth I thought it was time for an update.

The body is over at Bodycraft and Eric is making great progress. I had to get two new rear quarters as they were shot but otherwise apart for some local bits and bobs like the spare wheel well it wasn't too bad. Eric is taking it back to bare metal.

The gearbox and transfer case are back from Hardy Engineering and looking very pretty. Spent some time with them discussing what needed doing and their opnion was that it had seen very little use and apart from new oil seals and replacing or plating the bolts very little needed doing.

I've reinstalled the crank and pistons without any problems apart from missing a trick by not putting the rear crank oil seal in before tightening down the cap, so will have to fiddle about getting it. in. Then got stuck on the issue of the 5mm camshaft end float which i raised in another post.
Opinions have varied but speaking to Ray at V8 developments he said it wasn't a problem and as he concurred with RPI I will trust their word. He did mention that it was better to use existing rockers and shafts as the present replacements are poor quality. The originals are slightly pitted on some faces so will have to get them refaced.

The saga of the front cover relief valves continued where part had gone missing and the other side refused to budge. I ended up drilling and tappingthe end cap and slide hammering it out. So will have a bit of welding to do when my new gas arrives and my skill levels improve.

The A-D post trims have gone off to Thomas and Vines for reflocking so hopefully will see them back some time.

While I have been procrastinating about other bits I've given the garage floor a scrub and can now see where I've dropped some vital component.

Many thanks to everyone for their advice.

See you on the other side.

Super job David. Inspires me to put a few images up for the CVC.

Thanks Miah,

just what I needed to know.

Regards,

David

Well done H,

at least there is one good reason to be cheerful!

Moving on to the front cover which came back from the vapour blasters with the oil pressure relief valve in bits and parts missing.

Many thanks to Turner engineering for a replacement piston.

Looking at the oil pressure by pass valve there is a hollow tube within the spring should there also be one on the bypass valve?

I agree Richard, there are very few references to HRC.

The thrust plate though only sits at the front of the cam and there is no groove for it to run in.

Had a message back from RPi saying that the HRC is OK for a 4.0 and that that amount of movement is normal and the cam sprocket keeps it on which sounds a bit worrying with that amount of movement.

I have the 4.6 as err 5250.

Possible progress!

just removed the new camshaft and checked the part number which is HRC2629!
This in spite of the box being marked ERR3720.
Would this make a difference? I think the HRC part is for a Discovery.

Looking again at the RPI picture the cam has a much longer nose on it.

The existing thrust plate is an original looking "U" shape as per the parts and workshop manual although I see RPI show a completely circular retention plate.

Thanks Richard, I was beginning to think it was just me being dim.
If the original dimensions worked what could have changed? There isn't some mounting point at the rear face of the block that got lost in the vapour blasting is there? There's no mention of it in the workshop manual.

Having decided to trust the blue bag camshaft, thank you for all your thoughts, a new problem has arisen.

Probably just my failure to comprehend but having checked that the old and new camshaft are identical in dimensions the new one has 5mm of end float!
I've followed the workshop manual and reinstalled the old camshaft with the same result. With the camshaft thrust plate in place and no gears on, there is still 5mm of end float. The only thing that has changed is that the block has been vapour blasted.
I believe the thrust plate was a later addition but is 5mm acceptable.
Thanks

Hi Tony,

welcome. You'll find everyone on here very helpful.

Dave

There's no mention of one in my manual for a diesel or petrol.
