Exactly mate, the 4.6 wins on 4.0 on toque when shes there, I also have the added bonus of a new lower crank seal, new rad,new thermostat and water pump all of which I had to do when I first bought her !!! yes I have spent on this car since september when I bought her, 4 new bags and just about to do all 4 discs and pads of which I have, she is my family car so has to be tip top, I wonder how many people have changed to coils only to find out the reason that they were fitted with air in the first place !

I bought the Classic to tow with but it was a LWB one that had originally been on air but had been converted to springs. Unfortunately the springs used had been for a standard Classic so the rears were too soft for the extra 8" of body on the back. As soon as I hitched a trailer up I was looking at the sky. Fitted stiffer springs on the back which made a bit of a difference but not much and made the ride harsh when not towing. I had heard all the horror stories about the P38 but bought it purely for the EAS. Because of the mis-information from places like RPi about how weak the 4.6 was and how it would slip a liner if the wind happened to be blowing in the wrong direction, I deliberately went for the 4.0 litre. Only to later find that it is the longer stroke, rather than bigger bore, that gives the extra capacity and most of the commonly found information is complete bollocks from people trying to sell you a new engine. If the revs drop below 2,000 rpm when slogging up a hill with a lot of weight behind it, then it does start to lose interest, so I just drop it down from D to 3 to get the revs back up and it will accelerate back up.

You know thats a great point you have made mate, the absolute bollocks on other sites is so bad, I am so happy to have found this site as it seems all to be real people as I am, to say the least on the net you can go round and around in circles and worry like F!!!

I hope to get the box sorted soon as I do miss driving her and the sumer caravaning season is here soon.

Dont know whats best at the end of the day 4.0 or 4.6 ? had both and heard horror stories on both, dont worry me about liners lol or that will be next ! she seems to run smooth maybe ICV could do with a clean, done both coil pack (delphi) plugs and leads millers semi synthetic oil new bags all round and new linkages on the front ball joints look like they have been replaced and she rides well just a shame about the box and now the dreaded battery drain (another post ) but hey cars in general are always needed fixed, some I see are scary and on small "budget" cars that cost way more than new pump seals and valve block to repair and again running on LPG makes it about the same as a medium sized family saloon but a bit nicer to drive, also had air con overhauled new condensor rad and that fixed it and she is now ice cold in the summer and alot colder than the last P38 I had, anyone near me by the way need air con doing I have a great place over Fareham who know me well and re-gas is £20 so if system not working its a good cheap place to start from in fact any help I can be I am happy to help anyone I can.

Are there any other, seemingly unconnected, faults that might cause the BeCM to stay awake? Assuming the gearbox is still in there you can check that the BeCM sleeps by sitting in the car in the dark. With everything switched off, the gear position LED will be glowing dimly next to whatever gear it thinks it is in. After 2 minutes of sitting very still with everything switched off, it should go out. That tells you the BeCM has gone to sleep. If it doesn't, something is keeping it active. Do you have a meter so you can check the actual battery drain?

Good idea I did'nt know about the led will try that this evening and post my findings thank you.

Hi, thanks for all the replies they are all greatly appriciated.
She has 4 new bags on her no leaks and only does the normal god I need to be level range rover thing.
Yes I have a meter that I can try..not 100% sure on the way to go ?
I have thought of disconcerting the RF again and see if that makes much difference just seems heavy for an RF drain ?
I am also posting as to try and help others in the future so thanks in advance again all comments more than welcome.

Hi guys yet another issue to solve !
Over the last 4 weeks I have suffered battery drain, last charged in between christmas and new yer and this morning completely flat ! I mean flat flat.
Battery less than 7 months old 13 volts idle car charging at 14.38
No lights left on inside the car at all
No extra consumer units on, sat nav main power disconected and when I bought it RF receiver was disconected as well which I re connected and had no issues with it even leaving the car for 2 weeks and still loads of power
battery is a yussa 5000 and in good health
seems the previous owner had the same issue and had not found the cause............I dont know where to start ? still have to do gearbox and thought while I am "off road" I will try and fix this as well.
Last time went flat in 4 days ! seems a strong drain even for a p38 !

Well an update on the flex plate, I rang Guy Salmon the local stealers here and they quoted me for a flex plate £36.73 so I bought one, filter kit less oil £49 ! ouch !!! sio bearmach filters should be here today at £11.90 which I think are just as good but would'nt risk the flex plate.
I have found in the past that sometimes dealer prices are less than you think and others unbelievable even the guy on the phone that quoted me suggested that I buy bearmach !

That's the reason I bought a P38 in the first place (after a Classic), to tow a trailer between Peterborough and Nice in the south of France (see post 272 in this thread https://rangerovers.pub/topic/233-autobiography-reasons-to-buy-one?page=14). They just do it like no other car can and running on LPG makes them cheap to run too. What else can sit at 70 mph with over 2.5 tonnes hanging off the back in perfect comfort? With the cost of LPG being that much cheaper still in Europe, I drove mine the 1520 miles to Latvia on under £200 in fuel.

It amazes me that the entire drive goes through a bit of floppy tin and 4 piddly little M10 bolts.

That's the credit of the torqueconverter to let it happen smoothly, compare it the way a clutch is bolted to the flywheel of a manual shifter.
I am 100% on what you are saying.......its a Range Rover thing, some things are like awsome heavy duty and others like paper ! sure they went to school at BL years back like Jaguar did when they fitted marina gearboxs to a 4.2 strait six lump...........quite simply its never gonna work.
That being said I love these beasts, my last was a 4.0 SE and the only reason she went was because of this one as she is on LPG (not changing thread) and seriously makes a difference to fuel costs !
She tows the caravan out which is 1500kgs unladen like its not there.

Cool stuff just wanted to be sure before I ordered it guys and again thank you so much, No there is no way I am going to fit without it !

Cant get microcat working and few different ones..dont reckon anyone knows ? shes a 99' 4.6 thor HSE

cheers mate much app

hi guys anyone know where to get a 4.6 thor flex plate from......doing a box swop and its been suggested to do it but having trouble finding one.

Hi guys didnt see this until now as my computer logged me out !
Basicly christmas eve I were at some lights, put my foot down and clonk ! no drive but reved fine then found I had reverse and slight drive (in 3rd) drove home, no kickdown just in 3rd, then she threw the gearbox fault, now start up charge is over 14.3 and 1st selects but nothin g else until you select drive rev her knock and in limp no longer option to select 1st and a whiring sound so have concluded a gearbox failure.
I have found a guarenteed 4.6 thor hse 99' box ancd convertor the same model as mine which I have bought and am planning on fitting.........now
What oil ? where can I buy a new flex plate from ? as seems a shame to refit without it.

Any advice for fitting etc or anyone fancy the job give me a shout !
