What a collection! Are you sure you are OK?
Actually just really jealous - thought I'd done well to get away with 1 (oh and the non-running Lotus which is unfortunately currently proving the 'Loads of Trouble, usually serious' adage).

Good luck with it - this forum is a great help!

Finally got a bit of time (and patience!) and got the O rings on and the back plate screwed up. I replaced the original screw with a M5 allen head screw that I got a driver onto quite easily. I gave the pipes a good wiggle as I went - it was a bitch to get started as the rear bracket/plate floats around unless you can get a hand on it but after a false start (cross threaded!) it is all now in place.

For now, I've chickened out and will fill her up tomorrow so am praying for no leaks. Seriously can't believe LR made this service item so ridiculously difficult to get at - even a slightly redesigned air duct would have made it 100 times easier!

Not affiliated in any way - just a local guy to me who have helped with parts in the past and been really helpful. Not overly pricey either IMO

Good luck

Hi Dan,
Welcome aboard. Pictures always appreciated (of the car!)
Good luck

I put some imgur usage details in this thread a while back - I struggled initially but it now works a treat.
Hope it helps - can't do anything about the money/Mrs though........

Thanks for the replies. Skinny hands would be great but that's never going to happen - I drive a RR coz it fits me lol
I haven't been able to remove the ducting and was reluctant to cut it in half but I think this might be the way to go (why oh why didn't they make it two piece in the first place????. Out with the vibrating cutter thingy at the weekend as I'm working tomorrow :(

Less of a hurry now as I've just opened the o ring packet and I've only got 1! I think I assumed there would be 2 in a pack but that would make far too much sense. I mean, as if any one is ever going to just replace 1!!!

Also - just received an update on the sensor I had on back order from John Craddocks (about 2 weeks ago).

They want £80+postage as they had to 'outsource' supply! Predictably I've cancelled the order - that's extortionate IMO

Just managed to remove the cursed o rings from my car (Look east and spot the blue cloud - that'll give you a location!)

They were really crusted and flat but they've clearly been done before as the front edge of the under trim panel has been attacked in the past. Thanks for the tip on tightening and then untightening the screw - worked a treat!

One question - has anyone got any tips on how to actually get the new rings on the metal pipes. I got the old ones off with a small screwdriver pretty easily but space is severely compromised. I have removed the top binnacle and fiddled with the heater ducting but am really struggling to get access - it really is a piece of crap design.
I want to clean the join up nicely but I've stopped for the evening now before I torch the whole **ing vehicle.

Thanks in advance ;)

Yep - phoned Devon - none in stock. Same for Island4x4 - they emailed to say that some S/H ones were available on ebay. Websites not telling the full story. I have an outstanding order with craddocks but not overly hopeful as I've now had 2 emails telling me that they don't know when they'll arrive........

Guess it is a case of grab em where you can. Question is, do they genuinely fail or do the clips just break off?

Good luck with finding one. I've been looking for a new one for when I do my O-rings. Got to the point now where I've got one on order with Craddocks but they've no idea if and when it will arrive - most suppliers say it is an obsolete part! (STC3256 in case you're wondering)

Thanks for the tip - I am already well versed with PaulP38A - I went through his really helpful site with a fine tooth comb before buying a P38 and it still didn't put me off!

That bolt has been absent without leave since before I got the car. I guess I'll put one in at some point but I think there's a load of stuff to move out of the way - don't think it is a captive nut?
Weirdly, that top panel is the only place on the car with any signs rust - I wonder if a previous owner had a battery acid spillage as I've not seen another similarly affected. I keep it clean (ish) so hopefully that should stop it getting any worse.

Rather than start a new thread - I thought this might be a good place to seek clarification.

I am in the process of doing the heater o rings to hopefully cure a small leak of coolant but today I noticed this and wondered if this is what you are describing here?

Is the stain around the join indicative of the same problem or am I looking in the wrong place. When I first got the car I did replace all hoses (but I don't think I did this one). I did the 2 behind the AC compressor if I remember correctly.

Thanks

Cleaned, polished and treated to some new rear tailgate gas struts!

Can't disagree on how agricultural the classic now feels - and I've had and rebuilt 3 Series 3s on new chassis so I know what agricultural feels like.

The first P38 I looked at before I bought the one I did was a Jap import with 50k miles and a 4.6. I was seriously underwhelmed by the ride and found, on return to the garage who were selling it, that it had been put on springs.

The air ride is what makes the P38 so good for me - sure it is far from a perfect vehicle but it feels like they took all the experience of building the classic for 25 years and thought "how do we make it better, without losing the underlying DNA". The L322 and beyond have moved too far in the direction of Chelsea tractor for me and have suffered because of it - I guess the sales figures would dispute this from LR's perspective but if I ever fall out of love with the P38, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't replace it with a later model.

Very likely true. Acetone will evaporate leaving a oily residue. There are many better 'penetrative' materials available than WD40.

Forgive the somewhat annoying delivery!

I love the shape of the classic - especially the 2 door. Just to think you couldn't give them away not all that long ago..........

Check out this channel - amazing Irish fella who combines car restoration with time lapse filming. He has 40 or more videos dedicated primarily to restoring a classic RR and also a Lotus Esprit. Well worth the watch IMO.

It will either kill or cure your urges ;)

Thanks for all the help guys.

Just to confirm - I am over 45 and somewhere I do have a tin of grinding paste (unused!) but the only thing I've found so far is the wooden dowel with the rubber sucky things on the end (yes - I do believe that is the correct technical term...)

I guess that could beg the question - what is the most commonly owned but unused item in a P38 owners workshop?

Thanks - useful info.

Just as a point of interest, is there a need to drain the coolant? Given the height of the pipes going through the bulkhead and the fact that the heater matrix will be full of water anyway, does it make much difference? I was planning on just using a load of old towels.
