Yes have analogue and digital meter - did actually try when I first took it off and as far as I could tell it seemed pretty smooth but I thought my test was not very good so ordered the wrong one for £21. Now as Gilbert points out the correct one is in the region of a hundred !! What for - just a bit of plastic with a pot in it !

Gilbert you are on the ball ! Yes my ordered TPS has that keyway and the original has the butterfly shape. Do you think I've cocked up the system completely by putting the wrong one to try ?

Orange - yes I have a multimeter but after what Gilbert says perhaps I should not bother !

Well it is identical to the one already on the P38 ? apart from keyway on otherside ! Where does one find correct part nos for these things ?

Think if there was it must have been tiny until I pulled the hose about and it just fell apart. But it certainly pulled and ran better coming up the hill tonight. The TPS I ordered and tried out was here - do you think this would be a genuine reliable part even though the keyway is a different design where it engages ?

Actually, I'm beginning to think it might be wrong for the P38 - don't know how to tell !!

UK order From MG-Rover-COM new £23.99

It was Orange about the breather hose ...............
You can, part numbers as in these examples:
https://www.lrdirect.com/LLH500090-Hose-Oil/?
https://www.lrdirect.com/LLH500100-Hose-Breather-P38-Plenum/?
Or you can just find some plastic based hose and fit it with hose clips as long as it doesn't kink. Rubber water hose goes manky very quickly in oil.
EDIT didn't see your last where you used hose pipe :)
Theres a breather hose on the other side too...

Took my friend Gary down to the coast (5 miles) to a Spanish garage to collect his car and found surprise surprise that they reckon they can read and reset the P38. This is a bit lucky because all the other garages here I have asked over the years even if they can read codes have never been able to reset things and the nearest official RR garage that can is in Malaga 35 miles away. I don't think this local garage will be very expensive ! Anyway, going down on Wednesday to see if they can make sense of the high idle speed. Not sure if I should put on the new TPS which threw up the high idle in the first place or just let them reset the old one which at least idled ok. But after cleaning the idle valve and repairing the breather with the old hosepipe I notice that the faulty running under heat and low rpm /road speed up hill is much better - nearly normal ! But maybe there is a fault with the TPS at those higher driving rpm speeds ?
Also- looked at the replacement breather hose on website suggested by one of you (dare not check back - wipes my message) and the pic looks a bit longer than my old one which is L shape and only about 8 ins long. Also, I can only see one of these breathers not two from crankcase to the intake next to the TPS. Mine is a GEMS so perhaps there is only one.
Seems daft to have to spend so much of your time and effort to sort out what should be a simple problem. Bring back the old suck-squeeze -bang -blow and hammer and spanner of my old cars .....

July and August are hot and only ok if you are by the sea or swimming pool - mainly you get daytime temps around 38 and the Brits and Scandinavians who spend most of the year here go home for the summer months. The coast becomes very crowded with difficulty parking and all the Spanish take their holiday at this time coming from the north. The paint or whatever that sort of varnish is on car paintwork now, blisters off starting in patches and spreading all over the upper surfaces. If I had a little cottage in Salcombe I'd be there even though the weather gets me down. I know this is not strictly forum topic - some filmed from a land rover though - here is a film I did for Honda - just to show you the wild country high up - not so easy to access now as they have restricted vehicles in the 'Parc Natural'

Sounds like you have got it made Gilbert - just make sure those forest fires are on the other side of the mountain..........................my friend not far from where you are was getting quite worried some weeks ago. If you want a reason not to visit here in summer see my Fire film of the nearby region ..... Forest Fire Competa https://youtu.be/wcBNGvqhAUA

That's a long way and tolls and fuel expensive although not so many tolls in Spain. LPG is gradually spreading in Spain - 62 cents a litre but few and far between. My trips back rely on a fill here on coast, then Granada - Madrid - up near Burgos and once into France no problem. Taxis and Ambulances are moving to LPG but few cars are on it. Flying by ryan and easy out of season not too bad.

Have to get Sebastian to fix gate but use money needed for RR !

Ok - I've just realised that the 'Non-adaptation' as you say only relates to the TPS so any other changes can be compensated for - Ah - feel a little better for that - got to look on the bright side - I mean I could have pulled the gatepost (yes I know there is no actual gate) down onto the back of the car...............luckily it missed........back to mr vatman.

Seriously - if any one is tempted to come out here - I can offer sleeping for two (in comfortable private caravan beside house) with all normal facilities in house - food and drink within reason - on a friendly free basis but you 'must love dogs' 'cos there are five of them. I would not insist on the nanocom or trowel because I hope by then everything will be fixed. The accommodation is what you might call 'army' style so not the ritz if your other halves are fussy !
Here is a reminder of what we are at out here - !Nerja -Andalucia - A Postcard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMgH-VckdF0&feature=youtu.be)

As far as TPS is concerned - the old one appeared ok - not noticeably worn to any extent and I handled everything with care and the car has always idled perfectly for 10 years. Only thought of changing it as a safeguard. Put the replacement on but noticed it had a different shape keyway -half circle - and did not turn or move from its base position as I engaged with throttle spindle. It did not move the throttle which was seated ok. When started, idled fast at 2000 + so took it off and thought it best to put the original back. The original has to be turned slightly anti clockwise as one engages to the spindle to allow it to seat and this small turn means that the pot is not quite at the start of its track when screwed into place.. As you know, having put it back exactly as before it then idles faster than before about a 1000 rising to 1500. I drove around hoping it would re-adapt but you say this does not occur with the TPS. Now, having cleaned the idle valve carefully and replaced the crankcase breather hose that fixes near it, it won't idle at all so I don't know what is happening. It was as I was trying to drive under my sun shades which I do slowly lifting as I go with a stick out of the window that I pulled the gatepost down - so this bloody car has a lot to answer for. My knowledge of it is limited because it has worked more or less trouble free for the 11-12 years I have owned it.

Now I have to do the VAT !!! Car has to wait.

Thanks - reassuring - the plates - was originally owned by a Mayfair Arab who had his own number and when sold was re-registered with these plates - I suppose they are original - how that works I don't know. The reg cert says first registration in uk 01/03/1999 but the VIN is WA407496 and for parts I have to look at everything that says 'up to 99 MY'. I think it was built in '98. By the way, offering free holidays to anyone bearing a Nanocom and builders trowel - ok the builders trowel is not necessary.

Any bricklayers among you ?enter image description here

Anyway, just to show you what sort of prat you are dealing with - here are the pics of my fallen gatepost - amazing what a P38 can pull.............![enter image description here](https://i.imgur.com/EV09Fwk.jpg "enter image title here")

Having said all that and wasted your time I have found a diagram in the manual (very small) that looks right - confusing because it shows the lead attached. Just feel feted to have problems with this job !

PLEASE NOTE - Now found a pic that looks right after posting this- I haven't got as far as the CPS yet with all my problems with TPS and the Gatepost !! But looking through the manual the 'up to 99MY' CPS I ordered from Island although specified as for my 98 4.0 petrol P38 does not look like what i can see in the manual - allowing for the fact that the pic in the manual is pretty bad.

Can anyone confirm that this will be right for my RR whenever I get round to putting it on ? My chassis no. is within the range.enter image description here

I can see that Gilbert knows the nitty gritty of the little man in the ECU and I can at cost drive to the RR place in Malaga where peresumably they still have suitable testbook for my old P38 but there is one thing I don't understand. Idle and most performance was fine until I put the new TPS on and I noticed when fitting that the engagement allowed the start to be at zero/beginning of travel whereas the one I took off because of the plastic keyway set a slight start on the pot. This you remember worked ok as far as idle was concerned. As soon as i tried the new one it jumped to an idle of 2500 and I took it off straightaway and replaced the original. When starting this too idled fast abt 2000 so I assumed that the 'adaptive ' feature spoken of had been at work. Surely, if the idle is set to the zero volt/impedance position regardless it would have remembered with the old one and remained as before. A bit of a puzzle.

Started - idled nioely at 700 - started a short drive slowly but when I slowed down it stalled and does not like idling. All I have done was clean the IAC valve carefully and replace the breather pipe which was probably leaking since it fell open as soon as I touched it. Does this mean that the adaptive thing had more or less got it running ok when TPS had been swapped and allowing for leak on breather and now that I've put things back as they should be it has to re-adapt ??

Worse than that, returning and trying not to stall, caught the roof rack on the sun shade and pulled over one of the brick gateposts which was holding up the shade for the car !! Luckily it missed the car. Beginning to feel that luck is not on my side anymore ..........

Cleaned IAC valve - quite a buildup of black oily stuff but not impossible - of course the breather tube just fell apart so bodging with a bit of hosepipe - haven't tried to run it yet......

Tried an edit so out of sequence - but thanks makes sense now I have looked at it. Some of the pipes in the RR are shaped and preformed - like that breather - can I get a specific pipe like that anymore or does it have to bodge ?
