Umm - will have to get head round this ! As far as I knew the butterfly throttle was either properly closed and blocked the intake (being a snug fit) or able to begin opening when one put one's foot down. P38 has done abt 120kmiles. Having trouble visualizing the sequence of what goes on here - is over-centre referring to closed posn or somewhere midway. Rethinking - yes i understand that the butterfly is adjusted to be not fully closed with the stop screw - is it really enough wear and tear to make such a difference because when one is putting ones foot down the throttle is well open or as you say is that little delay in start enough to cause this shortage. The idle was not a problem before I changed things. Does the butterfly throttle get moved by any of the car systems independent of your foot ? Certainly the fault feels like a lack of fuel at the moment one increases the acceleration and needs the boost to get up a hill but this is dependent on the RPM - if one gets gear down and puts foot down it seems ok when the RPM is in the higher region. So, seems engine speed related - gonna change that CPS as part of the process but have to go down to see Dave as I can't get up to it from underneath on my track.
Yes that was my thought too but the way they waved their arms made me think it was a major system fault that went all through everywhere !!
By the way - did anyone pick up on my query ? Best way to clean 12 years of sand and oil off the engine. I know steam cleaning is what people do but I've heard it may not be good for the underbonnet electrics on the P38. What do you do ?
Well I'm usually pretty handy but the problems I have had with the P38 show me that I'm out of touch with the 'modern' computer cars even though I've driven it with no big problems for 12 years - which is why I'm out of touch.
Ah - thank you - success it now idles again and drives more or less ok - I suppose I now have an easy way of adjusting the idle speed but it is very sensitive and I left it at minimum abt 650 or so - hard to tell.
Perhaps if the gasket was missing then someone has been at it before ! Now I can think again about the original problem of lack of power at low rpm and low speed going up the small hills here - I will change the CPS first - just hope there is nothing I can cock up about that ! thanks again !
Thanks gilbert - in the middle of job - thought I had made the hole long enough but still a fraction to go - the slightest start on the pot track triggers the faster idle - took it off but plug still on and engine idles perfectly. Being a fussy guy I am trying to do prof job with minimum plastic removal that does not spoil the integrity of the TPS and its fixing. You'll think me a fussy bugger ! By the way, would you expect to see a gasket on the TPS - mine has none but was very secure as from the factory with blue gluey stuff in threads - but someone may have changed it before !
Yessir ! I will now - just like to have clever toys to play with - just hope the movement allowed by the holes is within range and position !
Oh - for the novice here does that mean it won't do the sort of reset thing - someone earlier mentioned it as if they had one ! Does anyone have the EAS vers. 4 stuff who can say what it does for certain ? have read the list but not clear what it can do !
Should just say that the Gods in the Big Range Rover Garage in the sky were pretty sniffy when they saw my impromptu temp hosepipe repair job and looked distinctly uncomfortable when they saw the LPG stuff all over the engine..........I could sense they were ready to blame everything on that foreign intrusion.........
Studying all the comments I sense that Gilbert is ticking all the right boxes. It is strange but you will know the reason, when I start the engine it goes to a normal idle speed as soon as starting - holds for 5 secs or so then slowly climbs up to abt 1600 and holds there. It does not seem to be idling quite as fast as when I first put the old TPS in - perhaps there is a bit of adaptive stuff working. Engaging gear it falls to normal but that is because of the load applied.
Hey I like the idea of the latest EAS gear - did not realise it was available and it is more or less affordable if the dogs go short on food ! Expect it will need the USB to OBD lead as the existing one as you say is RS 232 and I made it up myself from instructions.
There is still the underlying fault which started me on the wild goose chase and caused me to play around with things like TPS which was idling perfectly - and that is that at various road speeds but around 2500 rpm ish or lower it suddenly looses power when throttle applied for increase in gradient- sounds as if missing - makes a sort of hollow wof wof noise but recovers at changes of speed and gear. At 70 - 80 mph there is no noticeable problem - smooth and with power. I have yet to change the CPS which is LR original and the right one !! It seems that the ECU is getting duff info from a sensor - either through failure, heat or bad connections.
Oh dear - thought he might be wrong ! So did the EAS guy in USA (Storey ?) get into the system and write the programme to do all that stuff ? And it does adaptive resets ? That means I could reset idle ? Will it work on my old laptop which runs the early EAS and would i need a new lead to OBD as presumably the existing lead is just for the simple existing EAS
And - where do I get it all and what cost ?
Right - many miles - it still drives note, but Range Rover Malaga - marble floors - shiny new cars with Range Rover labels which I would never recognise as a Range Rover - only 70 thou euros, says - in broken Spanish/English big problem - they can't reset anything or words to that effect and said something about problem with mariposa which means butterfly and they would need it for a big checkover. So drove home having escaped without having to pay anything !
Stopped at 'Tune Rite' - german guy in village who assures me he can reset things but said when I changed the TPS I should have disconnected the Battery (does say this in the manual) but I didn't think it necessary. Anyway, he said go home, disconnect battery for at least 24 hours and the computer devil should reset to basics !!!! What do you make of this ? He said I can go back and he will reset things if that doesn't work !
Orange, this EAS unlock old freebie that I have is only for the Air suspension - are you saying that v4 does all the code reads on our P38s
Just one thing Gilbert - elongating holes for TPS position sounds ok if the values used are linear but what if the clever devil uses a non linear value interpretation at higher speeds - spanish guy was not enthusiastic !
Oh well you are right as ever ! Went to garage at 9 and met the boss guy who checked the details and said they could not do resets !!! The young fellow I saw first assured me they could. So on my way to the big Range Rover garage in the sky in Malaga .
Ah just realised what you mean - to elongate the screw holes - the other day thought you meant reshape the plastic keyway - clever stuff !
Regarding the TPS and idling - you may remember that until I removed it to try a change it idled perfectly - when the wrong one 'threw' the system I put the old one back and found the system didn't recognize it and as people suggested it will need a reset. Well, just now after checking the impedance I connected the plug without putting it back on the mounting - started the engine without touching the accelerator pedal and it idles perfectly. You remember I mentioned that when engaging the throttle drive key in the keyway it didn't allow one to seat it until it had a slight start on the pot. And in this correct mounting the idle is wrong at about 1500 ish. So it does seem as suggested that a reset will be the answer if mr Spain can do it tomorrow.
By the way - you can see the state of my engine - the dust and dirt here is awful - I've heard people say steam cleaning with all the electrics is asking for trouble - how would you do it ?
Bearing in mind that I'm up a mountain many miles from anything Range Rover apart from my two wrecks, you will be impressed by my temporary repair - there is no shortage or water pipes and fittings here - only the water to go though them !
Ok you pass.......just improved the temp hose pipe breather - till new one obtained and the thinner rubber pipe on other side looks in better condition. Tested the TPS with meter - looks smooth enough - there are so many sensors etc to make this thing run that it becomes a nightmare. I imagine you lot know your stuff so well because you have had to fix everything .....
Well you will not have any trouble ordering a beer when you come !!
For chris10
TPS
Hi Chris - you kindly mentioned you might have one going spare.. If you follow the topic you will see that I have ordered the wrong one and it has upset the Idle speed setting so putting the old one back on as it may be faulty at other speeds but at least it was correct for idle. Anyway, going to reset idle in garage if poss but if still a problem could I make an offer for your TPS ?
Chris
Thanks Gilbert. Will do some testing. To be fair to Spain Garage I was parked 70 m away and they were full inside with cars and very busy dealing with customers including Gary counting out his 700 euros in notes ! The garage guy came out to listen and look at the engine and still seemed confident that they could do it. I tried all my spanglish to make sure he understood but 'adaptive values' are beyond me so just have to cross fingers.
