God, I wish I could complain like this. I'd give an eye tooth, if I had one, for the price they go for there, i'd buy two, maybe three, just for spares. If you're lucky, a clunker (with the coil "enhancement") and virtually nothing else working, but good for parts, will run at around 6-7 grand. Driveable and saveable, 7 -12-ish!

Mine was eight and a bit thousand, and I chipped him down from over 12!

That particular one (the VSE), cleaned up and running correctly, with 170k miles would probably have a realistic asking price of somewhere around £4.5k over here and sell for around £4k.
I know of a few Batch 4 VSE's up for sale at the moment all asking in the range of £5500 to £15000 (!)
Perhaps it's time to start buying them up and containering them to the Phillipines.

lol. As i was reading George's post i thought about that. A forum ran P38 export business to the Philippines. George is the local contact who will sell our ice to the eskimos for a tidy profit and whilst we get rid of the ebay crap to foreign lands, we inevitably drive the domestic market up leaving the only P38's ours, which we then sell for millions. Fiendish!

George, you sir are a genius! lol

Let's look at this a bit closer shall we, before we get too giddy! :-)

Say we buy our '38 in the UK for 1,500 quid and then spend the same again on shipping and insurance. The vehicle (which must of course be a left hooker) will then stand us at three grand when it hits the docks. Then the fun starts. That lovely Mr Philippine-Customs will immediately hit us for 40% import duty, taking us to 4,200, providing he accepts the vehicle value of 1,500 in the first place. The actual purchase price is irrelevant, so he may decide it's worth more, probably will, and tax accordingly. Note this tax is on both the vehicle value and the shipping + insurance. He then sticks 10% VAT on top of that, bringing us to 4,620 as a minimum, then comes the killer.

This is the Ad Valorem Tax on top of the lot, which runs from 15% to 100% and is based on engine displacement. Bearing in mind they class anything over 1.6L as a 'gas guzzler', I think we can guess where our 4.6 V8 Range Rover's going to get stuck, can't we children? But let's be optimistic and stab at 75% or GBP3,645. This takes us to a nice round eight grand and right slap bang into the normal selling range. We'd probably make more money working at 7-11 for a week. ;)

Add to this several other factors such as you can only import one vehicle at a time, you must have owned it for six months overseas before you can import it, you have to prove it was bought with money made overseas, not here and in addition, you can't then sell it for three years.

All this without even thinking of the hassle of dealing with Philippine custom and import departments (oh yes, you need permission to import even before you start - not automatically forthcoming and I guess they'd question the need to import a 15-20 year old vehicle), let alone getting it registered once here.

Also let's not ignore the nice customs guy at the port who's always wanted a Range Rover as well, and decides that now is as good a time as any to realise his dream. In fact yes, let's ignore that shall we? Otherwise our little head will start to hurt!

I'll stick to mucking around with railways I think

Or you could just smuggle them in, hidden in a container full of cocaine?

Orangebean flagged this one up on the 2002 Vogue Restro thread :-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2002-Land-Rover-Range-Rover-P38-Vogue-SE-Very-Low-Mileage-59k-FSH/352222677323? but is it blue or green

If I weren't so far down the mid-life improvements route on mine that blue beast would be seriously tempting as it ticks all the boxes including LPG. Theoretically bit spendy but loads of miles left at normal servicing schedules so good on a £ per anticipated mile basis. Not stupidly far away too.

I see E-Bay has several low mileage late P38 up at the moment like

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Range-rover-p38-4-6l-vogue-2001-59000-mile-one-previouse-owner-fsh/132421373056?

and

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Range-Rover-4-4-Vogue-5dr-Automatic-10-months-mot-73-000-only-leather-seats/112668738513?

Seems to make something of an economic nonsense of doing serious mid life work on a car at 2 or 3 times the mileage.

Sorry if it came across wrong. :-)

It was a copy and paste from another forum where we've had this "make a fortune" debate before.

If it was do-able, I'd be a wealthy man now!

Given that Mr. Duterte is up for shooting anyone who so much as takes an aspirin, probably not the best plan!

Errm, now I'm not fully conversant with the underbonnet layout on a Thor but hasn't somebody stolen the AC compressor?

I’ve done the heads on a few with l322 front ends, they’ve all been minus the ac condenser, so obviously if you change the front you can’t have ac !
I’m still looking for the supercharger, must be a micro version

Unfortunately I am quite OCD about grammar and that has to be the worst piece I have ever read!! I had to read it twice to understand it.

Not sure why as it appears to still have the P38 bonnet and wings so it can't be a clearance thing.

Its not so much the grammar, more the complete lack of any punctuation mixed with so many misspelt words that makes it so hard to understand. I think a 10 year old might manage a better job of the text though.

The silver bits on it to me just look wrong - completely out of place bordering on making it painful to look at, Most of the photos seem to be trying not to show the whole vehicle as well.

I like the way the main picture shows the nearside of the car with no scrape on the bumper and a complete rubbing strip on the front door yet the close ups show the scrape (or crake) and at least the chrome strip, if not the whole rubbing strip, missing.

Seems to be missing the viscous fan and cowl too but does have what appears to be a Kenlowe thermostat on top of the rad. As for the way the AC pipes have been snapped off......

L322 lights are wider than the P38 ones so I imagine the "Bubba with a monster trade pack deal on Isopon" converters leave the aircon condenser off, junk the viscous fan and move the radiator back a bit to make room for the lights. Allegedly getting the L322 bumper mounted properly is, ahem, "less than easy" too. Not that any of the Bubbas and Bubba wannabees I've ever met have properly in their vocabulary anyway. In certain quarters taking an angle grinder to the welds for service access appears to be considered acceptable!

Folk claim to have done the job properly retaining the air-conditioning and viscous fan but imply its very hard work needing significant bodywork expertise to achieve a could've come from the factory result. Unfortunately the Photobucket issue seems to have deep sixed all the relevant pictures so its hard to verify that the words match reality.

Looks exactly like the same control knob for the Kenlowe fan my Mates Series III had until it fell apart a few years ago - he now has the fan on it but controlled by an inline fan switch in the top radiator pipe with a manual override instead. Hadn't noticed the AC pipes up the back of the engine bay shot until you mentioned them, not a promising sign either.

I'm guessing the first picture was taken when he brought the car, and the rest are as it is now?
