Corrected my error and it bled fine. Hoorah!
Only now the brakes don't fully release. Boo!

They are not on at full pressure as the vehicle will move but only with lots of throttle. I have not had chance yet to check if it is all calipers or perhaps just the front or rears. All lights extinguish on the dashboard including the new TC light.
I will try adjusting the stop plug (big allen bolt) to see if the power spool valve pre-load needs tweaking.

Tomorrow I will finally grovel under the dashboard and see which control module I have fitted. If it is the none-ETC variant could it be possible that the ETC is being activated even though the light is extinguished?

got distracted by a domestic emergency, rushed it and managed to assemble the pressure spool valve and spring the wrong way around. At least I don't need to remove the entire modulator to correct it.

I have been a plumb. A slight assembly error. I shall correct it tomorrow and hopefully have it resolved.

Yes, following RAVE. Master cylinder nipple first, then each front caliper. They bled up fine.
Then the booster system (nipple open, pedal down, ignition on until clear fluid emerges) but despite the pump running and the fluid level dropping a bit (and then stabilizing) there is no flow through either nipple. If the reservoir level continued to drop then at least the fluid would be going somewhere but it doesn't so I suspect it is just the accumulator being filled.

Well that wasn't quite the resounding success I was after...

The replacement unit is fitted (after transferring the stainless washer kit from the old one) and I now have a TC light on the dash. However, I can not bleed it. When trying to bleed the booster circuits the pump is running continuously but I am getting no fluid from either of the two bleed points.

Could this be a compatibility issue with the presumably non-ETC control module (I still haven't looked) or have I got a problem with the new modulator?

Mine has been pressed into daily service since I bought it two and a half years ago. Mines a diesel but I still love it.

Just a caution note on any intentions for a group by on the kits. When I ordered mine I also ordered one for Marty. Unfortunately it put the total value of the package high enough to attract import duty which far outweighed any savings on postage.

Well I have set aside saturday (tomorrow as I write this) to clean up the new modulator, fit it and bleed the brake system. Thogh I still haven't yet looked to see which ECU I have fitted!

Purchased.

Brake Modulator

Still need to check which ECU I have fitted mind.

Many thanks for all the help guys, particularly for taking the time to take the photo tanis.

I feel a purchase coming on. :)

Thanks for the replies, a bit of googling lead to another forum where it was suggested that the ANR2239 unit is the 2 wheel ETC model.

LandyZone

There is one on ebay at the moment that might soon become mine if I can get confirmation. It says ETC on the data plate, so long as it's not 4 wheel ETC.

I am finding a number of modulators / master-cylinders with ANR part numbers. Do any of these translate to STC numbers?

Good tip regarding checking which ECU is fitted, ta. I'll have a look tomorow. Fingers crossed as mine is also a 96 model.

I messaged a speacialist breaker on facebook and was told that the master cylinders (early ones ate least) are all the same. Not sure about this myself so have asked him why they bothered to give them different parts numbers and am waiting to hear back. Otherwise that would suggest that I could simply plug in the ETC enabled black box and I'd have traction control?

Thanks for the helpMarty, I shall check the part number on my current unit tomorrow and have a quick hunt on ebay now for the ETC number.

Hello folks,

I am looking to buy a replacement brake modulator/master cylinder to rebuild for my DSE as I am not happy with the one fitted. I rebuilt it last year but it had suffered some internal corrosion. It seemed to clean up ok but I beleive that there is some internal leakage as the ABS pump fires up every so-often and the pedal goes soft over time (I am confident that it is not air in the system).

My vehicle ia a '96 model without Traction Control. As I understand it the early rear axle only Traction Control version still has the same physical connections as the non-traction control model. I would like to fit a TCA model along with the correct control module and see if it gives me traction control. If I can pick up the two bits cheap enough then there's no harm in trying.

To that effect, does anyone know the part numbers for the different flavours of Brake Modulator / Master Cylinder?

Regards,

Smiler.

I fitted a set of shiny new BF Goodrich Urban Terrain tyres to mine as they had the best wet weather rating and my P38 is used mainly on the road towing etc... They are superb! Lots of grip, very quiet and are an all seasons tyre with snow snipes which proved amazingly effective on compacted snow. They have also worn really well with loads of tread left after 20k.

I do now have a second set of wheels with Insa Turbo muddy boots fitted seeing as I live on the edge of the Salisbury Plain...

Just posting to let you know that I'm still following. Had similar scenes in my house over the years with engine harnesses spread all over the floor. But only been as clever as a multimeter, not a laptop and CAN BUS wizardry. You're way above my current level.

Cheers, I shall press the magic button and hopefuly next summer we won't cook in the thing.

Thanks for that Sloth. How effective is it? It appears to flow more like a coolant radiator as in lots of individual tubes from one side to the other rather than one long snaking pipe. Has the air-con been blasting you with icy cold air over this recent hot spell?
