Booked the p38 into my local indy dealer to get the transfer box changed. Earliest they can do it is May 10th; which is 10 weeks !
She says they have never been so busy. Her theory is that owners have lots of spare cash that they haven't spent on holidays and they are spending it on their Landrovers. It is mostly a rural community where I take it and owners are farmers and agricultural workers, not affected so much by the lockdown. Will try and find somewhere else in the meantime.

Nice job, Sloth, but 3 batteries? ..... assuming you are keeping the one up front.
That could give 3000 amps! with those Hankook batteries. Holy shit.

Pierre, he did a good job on mine. Jon Dean in Biggleswade, @ a very reasonable price.
I sync'd it by putting it into the door lock and I then pressed close then open. It sync'd immediately. I am one happy bunny.

Got my repaired keyfob back from "second-remote-repairs" on UK Ebay. Recommended by our super-mod I think. Two Brownie points, Richard.
Nice new case and batteries and more importantly, it works after syncing. I am now back with two fobs!
@ £24.99 is a good deal. Leave it as a watch item and it drops to £22.50.

I would like the other toe rag, Fobfix, to get their comeuppance. Charged me £50 and failed to fix it.

If you are going to machine some spacer blocks yourself, make them so they are a tight push fit in the bump stops and stay there.
Mine drop out sometimes.

The sound of it missing a few times is a clue I think. Maybe one of the injectors isn't running right?
The engine is direct injection, unlike the p38 diesel, which is indirect and just a simple pintle valve.
It could of course be something else, but if your friend has done the checks I recommended and come up with nothing, I would move on to other things to check out. I would next take the injectors off and get them tested. Find a commercial diesel garage with the testing gear. It shouldn't cost too much and they will clean the nozzles and replace seals.

You can sell the +2" Terrafirmas. Offer them at half the new price on Ebay for starters.

Transfer case weighs 75kgs. That is without the brake drum.

The Rover 90 engine was a good engine. Overhead valve inlet and side valve exhaust. A good cross flow head design for its time.
I helped a mate rebuild one when I lived out in Africa.

Had a Classic that had been fitted with a Perkins engine. It was really a tractor engine with a big heavy flywheel. Worlds apart from later BMW diesels. The Perkins engine would only rev to 2800 rpm. It had a govenor that prevented it going any faster. Made overtaking hairy on occasion. It would pull a house down on torque.

A few thoughts on the Terrafirma shocks which have raised a comment or two.

There is more than one type. There are three that I know of for the p38 :-

There are road shocks TF125/126. Most people say these are too stiff and nothing like as good riding as Boge on the road. Never tried them so don't know.

Off road +2" TF144/145. I have these on mine with Arnott GenIII +2" air bags. I have run them for a few years so can give an informed opinion.
Substantially made with a 16mm rod. On road they are immediately stiffer than Boges. You feel every pothole and the inside of the car is noisy and rattles. They do soften up with time however. With four people in the car it is a lot quieter and the suspension seems to work better.
Off road on high setting they are far better. Much softer ride but well controlled on the rebound when you hit the bumps. This is partly due to the Arnotts where the spring rate is dependant on the cross sectional area of the piston. They are much better when towing with a heavy nose weight trailer. Something that is never mentioned.

Off road +2" TF176/177 adjustable damping rate, the bees knees. Dial in what you want. Expensive. Good feedback from users.

Ride quality is affected by several things. Dampers /spring rates /bushes /tyres.

Maybe I should have phrased it a bit better. I admit I am not that knowledgeable about the V8. Rather than cracked heads I should have said detached liners. Seems quite frequent occurance reading the forums. I am not aware it happens to other cars to the same extent as with the p38, like the TVR for example.

BMW cars with the same M51 diesel engine cover huge mileages typically 300,000+ kms on the continent. The Vauxhall Omega with the BMW engine similarly. BMW petrol engines are irrelevant to this discussion.

As with all IC engines, if you don't catch a cooling issue in time, you can quickly damage the engine. Some more, some less.

I think there were a few design flaws with the p38.
Lack of a level sensor on the coolant expansion tank is obviously one. The main reason for more cracked heads with the petrol V8 and the BMW diesel engines when they are used in the p38 compared to other models with those engines?
Lack of an access hatch in the boot to the fuel tank. Nearly all 4x4 cars have them.
Decision to fit the ZF 4HP22 gearbox to the 4.0 and diesel instead of fitting the 4HP24 across the range. Why? To save a few bob? On a top of the range SUV? You kidding me? I suppose they had to pay Lord Linley, since they only sold six.

I have just noticed that non genuine BMW expansion tanks can be had for around £50 GB or so. The genuine BMW one is usually over £100:-

It will also need a level sensor which are about £10.

I thought there was one in the Midlands. In a tatty state didn't I read on here or the other place. Owner knew what it was and wanted a lot for it.

I am not that familiar with the L322 but the M57 engine is the next evolution of the M51 engine in the p38.

First rule out the turbo hose being split. Examine closely and, with the engine running, run the palm of your hand close to the hose and the inlet manifold to feel for any leaks. Usually it would be accompanied by a smokey exhaust. I have had hose splits that seal up and difficult to see. The hose can also delaminate inside. Hard to detect without taking the hoses off.

Next is fuel. Any bubbles in the line to the FIP? Not even sure it has a clear pipe like the p38. Fuel filter has been changed?
Dirty diesel? run some off the bottom of the filter into a jug and have a look see.
Disconnect the MAF completely. It will revert to default settings if it is like the p38.
Intank fuel pump gone? What are the 3 pumps? FIP is one, intank pump is two, what is the third? Excuse my L322 ignorance.

Hoppy (Mukiwa) came round for his chips. Recons it might be bit rot.

It is too cold and I am too old. I will get someone to do it.

Alternatively, you can rotate the pump a little to advance the timing to compensate for the worn timing chains.

The job is done now, thanks guys. I would agree with all those comments having just done it.
I now need someone to fit it. I don't fancy lying on my back -2 deg C trying to bench press it into place.

Here are the gear sets side by side. They are identical except for the splines.

I now have a new manual epicyclic gear set available, if anyone wants to do a deal or a swap.
