I guess I still haven't figured it out.
But I have.....
Thanks. I've had the 2A for 26 years, the P38 is coming near 3 years, and the Disco about 9 months.
Thanks Richard
Love the 2A
When the army replaced all their Series 3s with Defenders, the old ones were all sold off. There was a former WW2 airfield near Litchfield where they were all stored, along with 3 aircraft hangers full of spare parts. An airfield full of Landies as far as the eye could see, all one price, except for the ones with 24V electrics as they were classed as commercial vehicles so had to have VAT added to the price. You could wander around, pick the ones you wanted and they would lift them out for you. All 2.25 petrol too. I bought about 10, mostly LWB, LHD ragtops and they went to France. Problem was, I had to drive them. I know what a Series 3 drives like so I hate to imagine what a Series 2A is like......
I suspect they drive about the same, other than no synchro in 1st or 2nd. Otherwise they added a bit of plastic to make them look a bit more modern. Very good off road, not very good on road. I was actually very surprised at how good the P38 and Disco were off road. I always thought that LR sacrificed a lot of off road capability for the more road worthy models. Not the case at all. There are a few places where the short wheel base of the 88" will outdo the newer ones, but in general, they are as good, and sometimes better, especially where Traction Control comes to play.
Back in about 2003 I did the off road course at Land Rover at Solihull. I did it in a Discovery 2 as that was what we had at work at the time (and work were paying for the course). I asked what was the best model off road expecting him to say the Defender and was surprised when he said the Range Rover. His comment was that the EAS made it far better than anything else they produced. He reckoned that they had laughed at the Freelander when it first appeared but he said even that was far better off road than they'd expected.
I agree about the Series on the road, 50 mph and you are into ear defender territory and the need for a serious massage after about 20 miles.
At 50mph in a series I'd be more worried about being able to stop than anything else if the brakes on the one I've been in is anything to go by. The one posted above looks very nice though, certainly a good looking example there.
The brakes on the Series properly maintained aren't too bad..
Atleast IMO
I agree, the brakes work fine, except after going through water.
After water, all bets are off. Especially if you have drums :O
Disc brakes dry off really quickly. After going through water with the 2A I keep a foot lightly on the brake pedal until the drums dry out. Otherwise you get horrible differential braking when you need to brake hard.
I drove through water that was over the bonnet in my Jeep one day, and did a classic Top Gear move as I rolled down my window to warn the oncoming driver and rolled straight past her entire car before reversing again :)
Work in progress ha
Well, you've got the right colours :)

The Series III I have had for the last 15 years (4 cyl LWB) I fitted 6 cyl brakes to the front which improved them quite a lot.

Thanks Morat
It will certainly keep me out of trouble for a while
Mine after a couple of the neighbours had bought a new polisher and wanted to try it out. All the results without the hard work!
