So, this morning, I got my new work schedule and as of next year, I'm demobilised for two months a year, starting February.

Step one is probably a holiday (not had for three years) but my mind also turns to the V8, as it would.

Mileage is fairly low, 115,000ms, if memory serves, but with no history to go at and given the state of the first couple of oil changes, I have no idea how long it had been running with basically black water in it.

Now, don't get me wrong, the engine runs beautifully, idles evenly, revs happily, so I think the fundamentals are okay. I just feel there's something a bit lacking and, given the above, maybe the cam is due replacement. I'll also have time on my hands to do it.

Sooo, What to do? Whilst I'm in there, it would be a shame to just replace stock for stock, without going wild. Seems to me there's the choice between Piper and Kent and several suppliers offer kits-ish.

However, the kits don't seem to offer pushrods or cam bearings. Why wouldn't I change them whilst stuff is in bits? How easy are cam bearings with the engine in situ?

Any recommendations on cam and any, "do's and don'ts", any cam specific tools I'll need?

This is, obviously in the future but, having to get everything together can take time, so I'd just like to be ready to roll.

Always checked my '95 cold.

Must go and have a look at the handbook!

He started off quite well. It took two attempts to get my valve block repair kit to me, but hey.

Then I got kinda frustrated that all I got for my next UD$250, was bullshit and excuses, followed by silence.

I'm a reasonable guy and when someone says they'll do something and can't, just say so.

Had he said, "Can't be arsed," and returned it, then different story.

That's when I started getting PMs from the God that is RRTH asking WTF I was taking about. I explained, he went silent too.

Funny about suppliers, isn't it?

When I first moved here I tried US ones. All the websites I played with, as soon as I inserted Philippines as the country, demanded a State and ZIP code, which, as we've not been part of the US since 1946, we don't have. All e-mails also went completely ignored.

Thinking, "Bollocks," I turned to the UK. Not a single issue since.

What? Not one of the good doctor's finest products?

Gets coat, closes door.

Thankyou all for your input, very helpful. I will start to sort out a full brake overhaul, think that is the best way forward.

Best way forward.

That's what I did on mine, full overhaul/replacement.

Rebuilt modulator, brake pump, new flexi hoses, overhauled calipers (although they were fine) new pads, hard lines don't rust here and, obviously, a full bleed.

No fancy discs/pads. Never had a problem with them since.

Finally!

Last week, whilst sorting out a list of P38 bits and pieces with a local mate, mentioned the knackered front and rear bumpers.

A day later get an SMS from another pal saying he knows who is flogging a pair. That would be Friday.

So, Sunday saw me and number one daughter doing the longest trip either of us have managed since March 17. A whole 30km round trip!

Anyway, upshot, after several years of looking, I'm now the proud owner of two un-split, un-holed bumpers.

Need to get the front painted in the correct colour (if I can ever find anyone to mix an aerosol for me) and get 'em fitted.

Cheap too, so happy boy!

George those downpipes+cats look great! Can you point me out to where to find them? I plan to replace my cats as I believe after 270K km it came time, plus I need to change the exhaust anyway .... thanks! Triple S search on the net gives nothing ...

Came from Rimmers, like this:

https://rimmerbros.com/ItemList--Range-Rover-P38-SS-Sports-CATs-free-flow--m-17544

Not cheap, but a sale came up at just the right time so the savings (nearly) covered shipping and duty.

Didn't realise they were Triple S until delivery. Rimmers don't mention it.

Maybe they have a couple of suppliers and I dropped lucky?

For completeness.

I may have already put this info on here somewhere, but if not and you wind up with an overhauled modulator and new accumulator pushing a problem down to the brake pump, it's an easy fix.

The pump started leaking and on stripping down, found an o-ring past it's best. This is 50mm I/d, 2mm X-section.

Of course, replacing this caused another leak. The shaft seal on the motor. Any pump shop should be able to supply (they're used on thousands of domestic water pumps here) and is called by the catchy name of , 16x8x6, SC/SF, NBR, SOG.

It's been three years or so now since I did all the brake works and not had a jot of trouble. Topped up the fluid once, not long after completion and never since.

Must be due a fluid change now!

Hope the above info helps.

Rimmers had a sale on (a while ago now) for stainless front pipes with sport cats. I'd not long fitted a locally sourced mild steel middle and back box, but the fronts were knackered, couldn't be found here and, well, the new ones were shiny and lovely. So I took the plunge.

Although Rimmers' site didn't specify manufacturer, turned out they were Triple S, and fitted beautifully at both ends, manifold and centre box. Also in two parts, so whilst I had to remove the gearbox X-member to get the old pipes out, next time, if I need to remove them for any reason, I won't.

When I need to do the rest of the system, I'll be looking hard at SSS for replacement.

Am I the only one whose completely out of there depth with all this 🤣😂🤣

No!

Hello and welcome.

If you're playing with brakes and want new flexis, bear in mind '95 and '96 are different from '97-on.

Mine after a couple of the neighbours had bought a new polisher and wanted to try it out. All the results without the hard work!

Just seen this. Yes, over the rod.

IIRC, it was only '95/6 that were like this. They changed in '97. So if you order new flexis, bear this in mind.

Don't ask me how I know, but Goodridge should NOW be aware of this fact!

Batteries and computers, a salutary tale.

'tis a sunny Monday morning many years ago when our hero arrives at Manchester Airport long-stay car park, ready to leave his vehicle and catch his usual weekly flight to Copenhagen.

"Sorry mate, long stay is closed for resurfacing, use short-stay and here's a leaflet telling you what to do when you come back."

Short stay it is then and, parking up, flick the interior light on to read said leaflet.

Read, get bag, lock up and catch flight.

Fast forward to Friday evening and, following said instructions, pay for the weeks parking at the machine, at normal long-stay rates. It's about 4pm and, given the distance to my house, I am anticipating an icy cold one in my local by 5.

Arrive at car. Have to open it with the key, as battery is as flat as a witch's wossnames. Who didn't switch the interior light off, then? 5pm is slipping away.

Get jump leads, open bonnet (the "plan" here is to stand looking pathetic until someone takes pity). Key is now in ignition when the drivers door swings closed and, in a last dying act, the doors all lock again. This is called a Design Feature.

Ring the ex to put my spare keys in a taxi and send them to me. Eventually, taxi arrives, I know the driver as a fellow darts team player. Open door, hook up jump leads to taxi.

"Engine Immobilised, insert EKA." This is called a Security Feature.

The Emergency Key Access code, which, when entered via the ignition key in the door lock, turns off the immobiliser. And where do I get this from? Oh, that'll be a main dealer. At 7pm on a Friday night? Maybe not. This is called a Right Pain in the Thingy.

"Let's grab my bag and go and have a beer," I suggest to my taxi driving friend. He agrees. Beer is at eight. ???

Following morning, I arrive back at the airport, replete with new battery, call the LR specialist I bought the Range Rover from, they contact the dealer and call me back with the key code. New battery in place, EKA entered and the mighty 4.0L roars into life. :)

Now I have to pay the lost ticket charge for short-stay, about a million GBP. This is called Daylight Robbery.

So yeah, batteries and computers.

To give credit where it's due, I wrote to the airport car park service, admitting my stupidity, setting out my plight and asking if they could see their way clear to taking pity on me for the lost ticket charge, perhaps the difference between short and long-stay costs? On my return to the UK the following Friday, I'd received a lovely reply, apologising for the inconvenience, and a cheque for the full amount! :)

And yes, I do have the EKC for my current one!

Then there's the one abut the Series 2A and the detached horse trailer...

Good to hear.

I'll speak to Fritz when this is over.

I would say it was the best $10 I have ever spent but that would not do justice to the time I spent in Bangkok some years ago....

One of the finest sentences I've seen on a forum for many a year. Nearly lost some beer reading that one!

Thank you.

Enjoy your retirement Richard, but only after you've gone back as a contractor and invoiced them to death!

I remember my ex-father in law was Chief Engineer for what was then Post Office Telephones in Manchester South. They were in the middle of switching out the old analogue exchanges to digital when he hit the mandatory (then) Civil Service retirement of 60. Within a week he was back as a consultant and I remember him musing that if he'd known how much they were going to give him earlier, he wouldn't have bothered working the intervening 44 years!

Fuelled it.

I can attest that it's a little pippin. Lovely motor.

If Gucci ever turns his back, he's gonna be missing some parts, that's for sure :-)

Hey George! Hopefully everything is alright with you guys with the quarantine we have in the Philippines right now. Lets's see each other soon with the other 38 guys when this dies down.

Hi Gucci. We're in double lockdown due to a +ve case in the house across the road. Very limited! Apart from that, you all good?

I may have asked before but did you get the seats done by the guy next to Fritz's place? They do some nice stuff.

Look forward to a meetup.
