And do a couple of tight circles on tarmac to test your Viscous. If it has failed, you'll be buying a new front diff in a few months time.

I'm quite happy with pulling a big bar. Less happy to snap stretch bolts. I could take Chris's advice and torque the stretch bolts... he's been around! ;)
But, that's not a decision I need to take until I've got the head off and skimmed.

OK well, that pushes it back a bit - I've just paid £700 for the Jeep and Duchess this month for bits and bobs. Mainly on the Jeep which got a new exhaust from the manifold back...

Well it's £100 in parts for a full gasket set and a set of stretch bolts from Island (10 bolt engine, is that correct?)
I've never done a headgasket solo before (I passed spanners for someone doing one on a BMW E30 years ago).
I've got a set of Torque wrenches and I know where the local machine shop to get the head skimmed.

Yep, just noise. It eases off on over-run, and it's pretty grim on acceleration. We're still running on all 8 smooth as ever.

The Duchess has had a mild tick for a long time now, and this time round she got an advisory for a slight leak of exhaust from the manifold.
Today I overtook a van with full beans and suddenly I'm driving a steam train!!
Call me a wimp but I really don't have a clue where to go next. She'll probably got to the local garage (who have been very good) but just in case, are there any simple things I should try first? I'm guessing that it's likely I'll need to pony up for a new (passenger) manifold - are there any recommended ones?

There are enough around to make it worthwhile but you can no longer count on filling up en route without a diversion. I take half a tank of petrol and normally end up doing longer (for me) journeys 50:50 LPG and petrol. It's still a significant saving.

Yes, my handheld GPS units (going back a few years now!) would always be happiest if you switched them on within a few days and a few miles of where you switched them off. If you flew, say, from Germany to Canada and switched on - you could be in for a significant wait.
That satnav in the RR either fires up with the correct location or puts us in Barnett Lane, Barnett which seems to be the default location at least for my car. It takes an hour or so to work out where we really are and then it's perfectly accurate. This makes me suspect that either the almanac data has run out (but noone else seems to have this issue and I'm on the latest disk) or the antenna isn't working very well (but it's accurate once it gets a fix) or the time being off is enough to force the unit to start from scratch with no position carried over from the last time it was switched off.
Or something else!

Dare I ask how old the fan was? I've a sudden desire to replace mine.

Does anyone know why my satnav keeps losing the time? I've noticed that when the SatNav decides we're in London (probably 90% of the time) the time displayed on the data screen is incorrect. If I drive for long enough the SatNav will eventually pick up the correct location, and time.
Thinking like a computer geek, is there a battery in the SatNav unit like the motherboard battery in a PC? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
