Interesting article indeed ! Not sure just what is special about the LINLEY though (other than what appears to be a 'Royal Connection' plus marble-effect steering wheel and leather headlining ...): Would appreciate a quick description/explanation (as I refuse to follow up the RRS.net link due to their Cookies nonsense, sorry !)

Think that eventually Car Manufacturers might fall under the same/similar rules ?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-46797396

(- Me neither: It would upset their long-established Planned Obsolescence 'Rules'...)

Interesting, I have never seen the Hackery and LPG Sections .... signed in or not !

Edit: But if I do a 'Search' for it (eg. using. 'Hackery') I can then see it ....

But, trying to view it. it tells me it is 403 / forbidden !!

I like how it says it is for "things that might break"... but that's applicable for many things on a P38 surely ?!

Ok, I am intrigued: How much is it to view... or do I need a special handshake or something ??

Ah yes Marty, the position of the brushes/connector too.... now that rings a bell !

Some folks no doubt bought those cheap Rimmer MG locks; Anyone care to pop one open and get the motor designation ?
(Disclaimer; It's a PITA to do it)

Hope that was cathartic Marty ! Seriously there are always some around who will try to exploit your kind/helpful nature; When folks try to take advantage like that BECM guy you should/could charge them by the hour for your very considerable expertise and advice... plus impose a much heftier deposit/core charge too as an 'incentive' for folks to actually return items etc....

Had a few like that myself (probably we all have); The worse ones are where you do them a mechanical/electrical favour and then they blame you for something else that happens (and which is totally unrelated) Years ago I gave someone a car ... One Sunday morning they appeared and said it had a problem, so I (electrically) bodged it temporarily (on the very strict basis that they would get it fixed properly the very next day ...). They didn't...of course. but (Long story short/ish) three weeks later I received a letter from a Solicitor referring the the 'death trap' I had "sold" their client etc...!! ( Thus I 're-possessed' it one night... and also visited their Solicitor in person...); Some people are just like that.... but karma is a b*tch...

Back on topic I am fairly sure that when I was messing about with my locks I found a supplier of the motors - as they use them on model (slot) cars, like 'Scalextrix'.. (?) It was a while ago but will have a search around my PC for details... As I recall the brushes used needed some sight mods though....

Later EDIT:
Sorry Marty I (finally) found my source and it was the spindle length that was the problem....but I am guessing you already found/rejected these !

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/12v-motor-CL-FK130SH-dc-slot_1963094196.html

There was also a company in the US selling versions with longer spindles but at £10 (plus similar in shipping !!)

I see that Halfords are still operating Black Friday deals until Midnight.... https://www.halfords.com/advice/cycling/brands/black-friday

Hmm.... I might get some clips as I am getting tired of tucking my pants in my socks....

To be fair it may just be the bike sales that are keeping them going: On-line sales will eventually hit the Retail Parks, not just the High Streets ?....

Ok, to be really fair I just checked out their deals (ie. beyond all their oil and kiddy seats 'offers'...) and found a Michelin Cordless Inflator.. £60
and on e-bay some (chancers) wanted £80.....

Interesting video: I think I saw this chap once in a Vauxhall stealership explaining to a lady 'just' why her 'standard' service was £800+.....

Nice to know that sometimes they can get it right though; https://mars.nasa.gov/raw_images/13/?site=insight

As Kirk (or possibly Matt Damon) might say; "Let's strip it for parts and build a better P38 BECM...."

Yeah, I tend to agree but occasionally there are worthwhile offers that crop up :)

You're right, hopefully some will be posted up !

The other 'practice' the on-line sellers seem to use more is to initially have genuine good deals to establish a 'good value' reputation....
but they slowly but surely creep the prices up once they have reeled you in..... (eg. they know who you are via 'cookies'...)

And e-bay themselves have many issues these days too of course: Of late I have found a couple of "gems" where sellers send you
something which does not match the photos and then say 'whoops can we offer a slight discount ?' for inferior products. The other
increasing problem is where their sellers are simply 'middle men' (No physical stock themselves but they have stuff delivered directly
from Screwfix/Amazon/etc at a mark up... Worse such mark-up I have found -so far- is 300%.. As ever - Buyer Beware ! )
Big clue here is these vendors often (claim to) have (say) 500K items for sale... ie on-line Buyer Even More Beware !!

Forgot to add that it seems e-bay are not overly concerned by these "practices", but I also note I have also had to use their
'Bad Feedback' and 'Returns' options more this year too (as their 'Customer Services' have also reduced.)

That's enough complaining but maybe we should also have a listing of those sellers/Retailers to avoid too ?

Finally here is a good example: Do take a close look at their 'before discount' prices though... Really ?

https://www.eurocarparts.com/black-friday

Sadly much of Black Friday is "over-hyped" of course, something we inherited from 'Retail Therapy Thanksgiving Weekend' of course......
and many/any related 'deals' are available throughout the year. At least that's what I have noted from the Car Parts folks I use...

Edit: Agree with you Gilbertd, much stuff is artificially marked up to be in their 'Sales discounts' offers or is already overpriced !

On cue I now see I have "a special Black Friday exclusive customer-only (etc) offer" from EuroCarParts for a dashcam.....
and I also see it is £5 cheaper elsewhere on e-bay....Apparently "Customer Loyalty" is really not what it used to mean...

Some interesting imagery there JMCL, but I thought pretty much all cars were like that ?! Lost track of the number of times I thought "WHO T F thought that technique/design/approach was a good idea ?"..... then I realised cars are actually not made to be dismantled, if it breaks we just have to buy a new one...at least that seems to be the Manufacturers primary philosophy.

(Note there is slight exception to that whereby if a stealer is doing a tricky maintenance job which they may charge say 5 hours labour for
then they have designed a special tool which actually allows them to do it in 20 minutes......

Quite a few folks over there in Singapore might agree George !

https://ifonlysingaporeans.blogspot.com/2018/10/dyson-electric-car-singapore.html

Hard to work out just exactly what he is thinking here, but he is still smarting about no-one taking his DPF design seriously either....

Well (again) I like that pink Evoke.... or is it a Provoke ? She probably just thinks that dark green P38s are too boring ?

Not quite sure why she has a snow-plough blade fitted on the front though; Are these an OEM accessory now ?

At least these pink ones are cheap:

Oh dear:

Ah, so it was an OEM locking nut not aftermarket... Did not realise that ! Makes it all much easier...

Mukiwa, yes indeed the whole Smart Metering market is in a mess, not helped by their claiming that having a Smart Meter would "save you money", which was why their ads. stating this were pulled - but at one time they said they planned for everyone to have such a meter by 2020 (at a cost of - £17bn...) Similarly with 'Variable Time Pricing', being removed/re-considered but I could see it all coming back with Electric Cars - if they were popular enough - (and they would just make you have a web connection rather than mobile one to get around the Data Traffic problems - Currently (sorry) Smart Meter communications is quite limited.)

It is all rather academic though, I seriously doubt substations/infrastructure could carry the extra demand if (say) 20% of a road actually had EVs with fast(er) charging... Had a chat with a man in a hole the other day who showed me the state of 80-year-old cables. He was adding a second phase to a house due to demand (at a cost of £2k + £500 to the Council to suspend parking spaces for 5 days to do the job....etc)

Yet still new diesels/petrol are to be banned from 2032..... any bets that it still won't have happened by 2042 ?

Not sure if this is about Reliability, Electric cars... or both:

https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/dyson-plans-premium-electric-car-2020/

Now will building them in SINGAPORE. Wonder if like the 'bladeless' (the're in the stand) fan he will call them 'motorless' - because it's under the bonnet ? Hope they are better quality than his other stuff then and not three times the price of (equally capable) equivalents too....

Do you think he knows (or cares) that you can B/S ladies into buying overpriced vacuum cleaners/hair driers/fans but that men buy the cars ?!?

Don't think this will help much either:

https://www.which.co.uk/news/2018/10/changes-to-electric-and-hybrid-car-grant-means-owners-will-pay-more/

Wait ! here's the answer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Mirai

'Only' £60K (and only 10 filling stations in the UK) too; Buy one soon and don't forget to claim that £3.5K 'grant' back from the Government !
Don't forget new Petrol/Diesel cars will be banned here from 2032..../rant off

When I had 'really decent' cars I would locate myself way out in the corners of car parks too, but still (other) idiots still managed to park right next to me and 'ding' them.... but I found a solution to this with my clearly unwashed P38, which has been written (scratched) on, dinged many times (in my absence) and badly needs a wash; Accordingly people don't park near it... so perhaps they think me 'past caring' (and they may have a point) !

Public car park bays seem to be designed around the notion that we are all still driving around in Morris Minors...

Forgot to add the short version of the video nasty link I posted above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdRCfpwEHbM

Pretty sure you could easily cobble together a drill-centreing device/tube and use a standard left-hand stud extractor though....

And here was me thinking £90/corner a little excessive.... !

(After watching those videos with folks waving big hammers/chisels/ grinders/gas torches/air-tools/etc around near alloys I have become somewhat more biased...did manufacturers just invent alloys to rob us (even more) ?

Have you perused the Rimmer Brothers 'Death Wobble' vids.. yet Smiler ?

Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtr2aBu1reI

I have had standard alloys stolen Chris. and I had just fitted new ££ tyres; Never found out who it was (or if their minds were right either !) but I have always fitted locking nuts since...

-When I bought 2 replacements (FORD) I asked if they sold locking wheel nuts too; They didn't..... Might be something to do with wheels being £££ and locking nuts being £. Even standard alloys can be pricey of course. At maybe £1K/set new (plus tyres) locking nuts seem like a wise investment. Even wiser if we don't air-tool them on/off too !

Something to consider: Based on photos (and V5 proof): "from £30..."

https://www.lockingwheelnutkeys.co.uk/

Or specifically:

https://www.lockingwheelnutkeys.co.uk/product-page/land-rover-1

£40 is reasonable considering the alternatives (as seen on all the YouTube video nasties covering this !):

eg. (Just FF to 4.30)...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyBHK2jjupg:

Now what was that saying about "cracking a nut with a sledge hammer " ?!

('Spoiler': He is simply just whacking a 19mm 12-star socket onto it.....
I do like the part where he says he 'wants to use it again' though)

Actually this is my favourite......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq77uKSMU6M

..... or just look at this link if you don't have the time to watch the video:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/mcgard-locking-wheel-bolts-removal-drill-diy.html

Even longer..... even more painful to watch (Sorry):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-dr38wV7nA

Forgot to mention the "Hubitools LugDriller HU42025" in that last video is £400

  • The moral to the tale is surely don't let anyone use an air-wrench near your wheels.....
and always take off any locking nuts yourself, and grease those studs etc too !..
