I read a how to on the net about this. Need to pull down on the gap where the glove box shuts, then with a posi drive bit and a little spanner, you can undo the screws securing the glove box to the dash. Then you're able to work on it once it's away.
Hmm, might be worth a shot then.
Contact cleaner or car cleaner?

It might be worth a shot with some contact cleaner first - Mine decided to play up in such a way that the car wouldn't start, but seemed to show all gears except 3/2/1 (blank on those). Thats on a Disco 2 though so may behave slightly differently, though its the same switch as far as I can tell.
I took it off and sprayed it with contact cleaner down the hole that the wires go into (mostly as it was stuck in a place it couldn't stay in for long) and its been fine since, though i have got another switch since then just in case (as it prevented it starting).
Cheers, but for the tenner at the scrapyard, i'd rather be safe and go with the new one rather than take the old one off the car, open it up, potentially break something in the process and then be stuck with no car to get anywhere.
It appears to be still riveted together. think i may just as well go get one from the scrapyard. There's a p38 just arrived that was fully working. I've looked it up on google and people reckon they can get water ingress down the breather thus knacking it up, Perhaps this is what's happened.
some of the wiring connectors are grey, and some are black. Is there a difference?
The p38 in the scrappy is a 2002. Mines a 2000. Same switch?
Thanks
Got round to having another look at the XYZ switch. Got both nuts slackened off and was able to move it. No change inside the car though. Neutral doesn't light up. Is it a take the switch off, open it up and clean it job??

Well if you're not impressed there's always the 14 day return option under distance selling laws.
Best of luck though, let's hope you get it all running sweetly!
Could've bought a nano, fixed the problem, then sent it back within 14 days. lol
At the risk of sounding silly, Can you not take it to a garage that are able to do the diagnostics? Be cheaper than top end of £300. The money you'll save will go a way to buying the possible bits to fix it.
Thanks. I enjoyed it.
Forgot to add that it's a nice sound. Only a little louder than the stock exhaust. Nice low note that's unobtrusive into the cabin. My mate was trying to convince me to take the centre box out but methinks the Mrs would go mad at the sound.
Got codes
P1171 (still) which i believe is both banks running lean
and i've got
P1174 which i dunno cause i can't get a straight answer from googling. Some say MAF, Some say it's caused by vacuum leaks
This was running on petrol only.
I checked for vacuum leaks the other day with some carb cleaner but didn't seem to find anything.
Done! With a bit of guidance from my mate and free rein of his facilities, I don't think i've done bad. Won't win any awards and I recall hearing Heath Robinson, but i'm pretty pleased. Total cost £30.
Don't see how. it's not running like sh**e like it used to before Simon set it up. My idles are pretty consistent on both petrol and lpg.
The old car developed an underpowered issue at one point. Would hesitate to change down when you put your boot down and then when it did, would hesitate to pick up. Turned out to be a 5mm split in the exhaust at the Y branch. Fixed it and it was a completely different.
This however feels a bit different to that. I did ask when i took it for MOT about an exhaust blow but the guy reckoned it sealed up ok for the emissions so i've kind of discounted that theory on trust that he's right. Sorting that stainless exhaust today so i'll be checking it again.
Ran it on petrol to rest adaptives when Simon did the LPG. Further investigation required then!
aye. The stuff Richard says. Never thought but exhaust paste would do the job. Intumescent sealant is fire silicone. Use it in building trade in high heat applications like boilers and fires. Mapei dona high temperature one that goes up to 1200 degrees.
would intumescent sealant work?
i don't recall 6 washers on mine when i replaced the mounts. i'll have a look tomorrow.
Any thoughts on the performance issue?
Have i read correctly that if there were an engine misfire, then when the torque converter locks up, the misfire will be more pronounced?
When i saw Simon, he thought that there was a misfire on number 6. I've not had this investigated yet as i want to gather as much evidence as possible to try and correctly diagnose the issue without blindly throwing money at random items. No point only going in as far as an injector, if the problem is further inside, so to speak. Or perhaps i have more than 1 problem. Could the misfire account for the poor acceleration up hill and not be as noticeable on the flat as the engine is under more load on a hill? Although, that doesn't explain the drony/whirring that appears at approx 40-50mph on over-run. Doesn't happen below that speed.

You can use other speakers, just mount the pcb on the side and extend cables to speakers, the thing with second hand speakers if from a p38, they will be minimum 15yrs old !
They're also a fiver. lol. Not looking to upgrade the system. Just was really annoying me that i could hear a rattle. I don't have the sub turned up all the way. Just use it to round the sound. I'll probably upgrade the whole lot at some point. Until then, i just need a cheap replacement to plug the gap as it's even worse now with one speaker missing as the sub isn't sealed.
Switched between lpg and petrol and didn't really notice much of a difference. Perhaps a slight one but we're talking significant slowness here. I know they're not a sports car, but a 4.6 V8 should really be able to fly up and down moor roads. Felt like i was driving a 1litre Micra at times. no poke at all.
Just drove home from my mums which is pretty flat all the way and theres no probs with acceleration. Seems to be when its asked to go up a hill that it's struggling for power. changes down gear and revs go up but no immediate increase in speed. As though the extra power is not being transferred to the wheels. Do the same on the flat and you're off. Had i have not had another p38 i probably wouldn't know the difference but this being my second, i know that there's definitely a problem.
Out of interest Richard, which way do the washers go on? dome side up?
I went on a 60 mile round trip over the North Yorkshire moors yesterday to pick a bath up. The roads are really nice and you can see for miles. There's loads of uphill, downhill though and i noticed i definitely have a power/performance problem.
Car was really struggling up hills. The acceleration was really slow and when i put my foot down, it changed gear no problem, the revs went up, but we didn't seem to gain much more momentum. Obviously we gained a little bit of speed but it was horribly slow. On the flat, it's fine. From time to time i could hear and feel a low droning/whirring noise. I could liken the noise to a microlight aeroplane overhead. One of those with the big fan on the back or perhaps similar to a dishwasher on a wash cycle. If i recall, it was usually as we were going down a hill and i'd taken my foot off. So basically coasting or over run. whichever the correct term is. Speed was generally 40-60mph most of the way.
Temperature is fine. never moved from the middle. Coolant level is fine. Engine oil level is good. Checked both diffs and levels are fine. Have no fault codes.
On a day to day basis, i'm usually on flat roads with not really any hills so i haven't noticed this as much although i have mentioned in previous posts about thinking the car is a bit under powered. I sold my other p38 yesterday but i drove it before i did, and it went like an F1 car in comparison.
Thanks.
Sorted this morning. Had to take disc changer out, undo 3 bolts that mount subwoofer frame to car then lift sub out, undo the back 4 screws that i couldn't get to whilst it was bolted in, split sub in half, take the single screw that holds the ampto the speaker out, then the speaker just fell out.
Easy as that. lol.
Ripped cone. Get a new one from scrappy on Tuesday.
