Great photos but IMHO definitely from Mars......

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury-arc_valve

.... or The Isle of Man....

I'm just impressed that they managed to salvage so much stuff off the Titanic.....

Just had a quick look at his site: He certainly seems to have a different idea of what 'NEW' means too: Item: 292137253847

It is irritating when photos and descriptions are so different: Of late I have been giving bad feedback when this happens,
similarly when vendors say they are 'in the UK' but they are not..... At least e-bay has kept my P38 on the road though....

Now here's an eBay bargain for the discerning Vogue SE owner...?

But surely any (really) discerning owner would spend the £600 on diagnostic kit -like a Nano etc- instead OB ?

Nice to see an amp for sale that is apparently about the same price as some (whole) used P38s are though !

I had suspected that RR (and to be fair '£1/nut' is what you normally see when cars are being broken) but he may have more success with a standard "auction+ reserve price" approach anyway (?) No extra photos, but no receipts/proof for new (presumed ?) Coscast engine, 'EAS is being worked on' etc etc is not really helping him either - otherwise it's just really all just a 'fishing expedition' surely ? Probably unfair but there is something about all this that does not 'ring true' (?) Nice to see he is 'taking appointments to view' though !...

Quite a strange ad... but hopefully "when it stops raining" he will 'post up some more photos' ?!

He seems to have forgotten the standard disclaimer "if you bid £1 you get a nut" too
(Or perhaps it _is _there - in the very small print ?)

Do the Chinese (plagiarists) know these cars are (more) 'valuable' with a H&H wooden table ??....

Tagging something on here because it was irritating but was an EASy fix.....

(One of those where it has to get worse before you can track it)

Symptoms; The (usual) random/occasional 'Xmas tree lights' showing up, eventually became "EAS Fault",
diagnosed to Front/Right Height sensor giving out-of-range readings.

Fix: Turned out it was just some corrosion in the "knee" joint on the Pot. linkage. This made the joint stiff
enough to stick and affect the reading. (For those unaware this joint is just a pin through a rubber bush)

One of those jobs worth checking/lubricating next time you are under the beast (?)

Note; May be more common if/when the car sits for a while: ie. If a daily driver the joint
may not stiffen up so much (?)

You wouldn't need to use a spectrum analyser. Wirewound resistors are about as inductive as a straight piece of wire.

Gordon: We are talking at cross-purposes (again) !..
I was actually saying with an Analyser you could prove that using wirewounds in that circuit would have NO discernible 'frequency' effect/s.

The main issue here is why so many appear to believe it would ! In fact I will also contact Ray A. and ask him that exact question....
and I fully expect I will get the reply 'somebody told me it was important...." !

OB: I blame Heavy Metal for my own hearing losses (and let's face it a P38 is pretty heavy metal too.....)

" The Ambler circuit is intended to be an impedance matching circuit/ attenuator to drive the door amps from the speaker output of any old head unit. "
I realised that OB but it still does not really explain the whole 'not wirewound' issue in this case.... and I guess you could only prove all this with a (AF) Spectrum Analyser, too ! Similarly I am aware that ground loops etc as associated with screened wire can be an issue with (more) traditional systems. At risk of getting into (more) trouble with the purists the interior of a P38 is not exactly a (perfect) Anechoic Chamber either... not to mention our (at least probably for many of us now) 15K Hz (or less) upper range either.... aka "Hiss, what's that ??"... !!

Wirewound won't make the tiniest bit of difference, even at lowish RF and certainly not at audio. The inductance is in the order of picoHenries.

In fact I agree but simply did not want to 'slight' the helpful author (and hence my 'may'... rather than a straight 'he's wrong').
He had stated: "....not wire wound or you will produce undesirable inductive loading"

Accordingly I would personally use a single wirewound 47 ohm / 5W in place of the three 120 ohm / 1W items, as implied.

For some reason folks do get their panties in a twist with ICE circuitry, particularly as far as expected 'hi fi' results are concerned
and I don't know where this particular issue originated from either but I suspect it might be from cross-over filters and the like (?)

Report them to ebay.....

If there is a RS outlet near to you pop in and they will help you

However there loads of other alternatives on ebay too

eg. 362081041472; They have cheapish 330 and 15 ohms so you can then parallel/series up to make 110 ohms and 15 ohms...
Yes, That would take quite a few resistors but it is better than arguing with a bunch of numpties !!

Or just use 47 ohm 5W items etc... (?)
Note Ray A. has suggested not using wirewound as they have an inductance which may affect frequency response

Some very impressive science/calculations there Gordon ! Never thought I would see an explanation with a P38 and Hydrogen mentioned either !

The main problem is we are again back in 'perpetual motion territory', ie we would need a HUGE alternator/regulator to produce enough energy to electrolytically split enough water to H/02 in the first case... and that alternator would thus increase engine load (and fuel consumption) considerably - as Morat has previously stated....

Of course we could 'just' use a small on-board nuclear reactor to supply power to the electrolysis process instead....? ( just don't tell the H&SE !!)

How about this instead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Nucleon
No mention there of 'glow-in-the-dark' drivers though....

Have you tried the old trick of tracing the leak with vegetable dyes of different colours ?

Don't drill out the screws (it will melt the plastic) try cutting a slot for a flat-blade driver with a little diamond disk in a dremel (if space allows)

  • I could now go off on a whole "why didn't they use more stainless screws/bolts etc during assembly" tangent but won't as it won't help....

Count me in Colin, Cheers !

I already have an MSV - which works great (along with my PC) but the Nano is much more versatile/portable.

The key (differentiating) factor with any Diagnostics Kit is good support, and with the 'others' it is virtually non-existent of course !

Some of these EV beasties have 'Regenerative Braking' of course although I suspect that's more of a gimmick than anything.....

But of course you could have a wind turbine on top to 'charge up whilst parked up' (if there is handy breeze,..) ?

Or maybe not: (only 80W in a gale): https://www.emarineinc.com/rutland-504-12-volt-wind-turbine

Well as we 'all' start to buy Electric vehicles the National Grid won't be able to cope (of course) and the Government will then say "we need to dig up all the roads to put better cables in etc" and "guess what, you're paying for it ".... Hmmm... do you think that's actually their plan ?...I think I will just buy a massive diesel generator instead.....

Ooops. guessing your Tesla man does not pay for his 'refuelling' either then Sloth.....?? Don't tell the tax people now, will you ?!

I have had a couple of near-incidents as a pedestrian with the Tesla S in towns... they are like a milk floats - in stealth mode.... deadly.
Think they need a man with a red flag (again)... or a 'Beep Beep Beep' like fork-lift trucks do (or via a P38 dash for that matter.... !!)

Speaking of "1.5L engines with twin turbos"..... the i8: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6KIBFiIOjw
"Sound effects" are available indeed (from about 4.40), wonder if you can also load a bunch of MP3s in there though.... ?
eg. from a Saturn 5 rocket engine....

Alternatively, I am pretty sure this is just a 1.5L with twin turbos...
Like the first comment about that too !

Sorry Gilbertd, I meant the kind of meter you (ie. she) would have to put a token/card in to charge, and so paid for by Electric Car owners themselves of course.

I realised a long time ago they the VAT/HMRC/etc folks like to make things unnecessarily complex so companies get overwhelmed by all the rules/paperwork rather than spending time developing the business (and thus paying more tax..). Don't get me started on R&D allowances though !

OB's comments made me think of something too: When ("in the near future......") we are ALL driving Electric cars cars perhaps we can play the sound of a nice V6/V8 etc through the car's Sound System (sychronised to the speed/acceleration etc). A "hum" just does not do it for me....

Gilbertd: Could your place of work not 'just' offer a pre-payment type meter for your Leafy colleague/s ? ( I couid also suggest her keeping a petrol generator there, that should also prove popular..)

I have noted that lots of folks have been attracted to Electric/Hybrid cars because of reduced "Road Tax" (and/or 'congestion charges')... and then seem displeased when I say, yes, for the moment. And are we all supposed to believe that the Government will actually stand by and watch petrol 'duties' simply evaporate? (Sorry).

Politicians are universally clueless about cars... Michael Gove's announcement that we won't have ICE after 2040 is an absurd 'Crowd Pleaser'
(Even thoufg the French started this particular rumour.....) Pretty sure we won't have Gove in office much longer either, though....)

Really want to 'Save The Planet' Michael ? Then ensure cars are designed to last 200K miles in the first case......
