I ended up having to remove a large star washer to dismantle it, but trust me, you don't want to have to do that - it's under load, and a pig to get back on. I'd just mask the black bit
In a bid to stop this thread turning into an exclusive gallery of a certain Monte Carlo blue RR, here are my two:

Factory shd have covered this with leather in the first place - it's more durable, and a piece of p*** to spray mount
hoho.... I managed to order the wrong brake drums for the Defender. I had the first one fully torqued up before I worked out why the wheel wasn't turning properly. Took me six months to sell a pair of mint Brembo drums on ebay... However, I'm sure I'll think of something else - which I've suppressed the memory of. Well - there was the time like a complete idiot when I was working on the electrics of the wife's Audi I got +ve and -ve the wrong way round to a remote battery (mitigation: it was dark)... two melted croc clips later and all that needed fixing on the audi was the master fuse (thank God).
I now feel blessed that I only suffer from bits of broken trim where the POs left their trail
Tnx Brian, not impossible, it just appeared in the footwell, and so cd easily have been lurking loose in the dash for some time
that's hilarious. who said yanks don't understand irony

Sounds expensive... Or not?
SR, other than a dremel (?) what do you have in the kit? I have: tow rope. Jump leads, coolant, engine oil, serp belt, funnel and nano in the glove box. Although I don't always have it in the RR my maplins charge pack gets alot of use recovering vehicles with dodgy batteries and integrated pump - less useful for diesels tho
So here's a starter for 10. This was left over after taking the dash off and having the ducts and vents out. Clearly belongs somewhere in the HEVAC system, but where? and should I care?
I thought we cd have an "any ideas ?" thread to identify the random bit that you had left after reassembling your RR - or the random connector without a component etc

Yep, theres an AV input at the back as well
I think the aerial runs to behind the HEVAC at the mo, to those metal boxes. Probably I shd relocate both silver boxes to the cubby box ( at some point). I think the input switching for the screen is embedded in those boxes
My Defender has done this for the last 20yrs, and no issues. That doesn't help solve the issue, but might put your mind at rest. That said, if you crack it, then I'm all ears
FInal product. I'll work on the colour match if i get seriously bored
This is a "dash off view". These two boxes are buried behind the HEVAC. The two inline fuses in the foreground are on the YW and UW wires that you see going into the top box.. Unfortunately I didn't take a photo of the other end, but black coax (you can see it coiled and joined in the lower foreground) seems to go in that end (presumably from the aerial, on the roof. I need to track the cabling that goes up to the seatrests, but IIRC that is the same blue cabling
Here's the wiring for the RSE - the blue audio cabling is coming from two magic silver boxes (see next)
This was the old look of the centre console - you can see 3 switches - headphones, remote sensor (presumably for Sony RC above) and power on/ off
