The only place for a coil spring is up Zebedee's arse

It seems a bit weird to lose spark on one whole bank as each coil fires one plug on each bank on a GEMs - assuming I'm reading this right:

I'm trying to think what else it could be that one whole bank has in common on the ignition side of things.

I think you did the right thing!

Good point but from a cold start everything is at ambient anyway so the heater plate isn't going to make a difference.

I've bypassed mine, no issues so far. I simply removed the hoses and left the plate and bolts in place so it can be hooked up again later if I ever run into icing problems.
If you suspect an air leak it's an area to test but it won't have any effect on starting especially in this weather.

That is very neat - fits right in!

I am working (from home) but a weekend one could work. Or next week (I'm on holiday).
I'll send you all a virtual burger :)

That is properly stuck, well done :)

and what did you do in 1994 that caused you to meet a GMP Traffic officer? Would probably still have been using their Classics then.

I ran out of fuel on the M62.. nothing sinister except I had two SA80s in the back! Simpler times! :)

Probably the guy I met in about 1994 - he was a huge fan :)

Tanis, do you have a charger that will do a de-sulphation cycle? My latest acquisition does and it can work minor miracles with tired batteries.
This is the one I have but there are many others: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00E907PWS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That one is available quite reasonably now as there's a new range out from that company.

Great news! And you've got a refreshed motor as a side-effect.

I like the way you've gone straight to cosmetics :) Approved!!

Were you charging the battery out of the car? If so, it sounds like it's about to become a spare...

Hats off Sloth, you're really going after this!

Mine was doing exactly that until I changed the plugs and wires.
It started with sometimes needing a second crank to get going on very cold days and ended up starting, stumbling and flooding enough to be a major pain.

Either way, it's got to be Spark or Fuel so check em both :)

If you're getting a big Impact Driver I'd recommend making sure you've got some ear defence to go with it. I didn't realise how loud those things are until I borrowed a big 1/2" DeWalt to shift a couple of nuts on my transmission cross-member. After 45s per nut on full Whack my ears were ringing!

Certbot is great, though :)

Ah well, that's what you get for trusting wikipedia!
Apparently it was widely used in the British car industry and the Rover Group but if it was special edition P38s then mine isn't. I'm pretty sure the main parts of the seat are real leather though, going by touch. I'm not going to strip one down to find out :)

I'm glad to say I came from 6 BMWs in a row. 4 E30s, and E39 and an E46. Sadly they're as electronically opaque as anything else now. I don't understand the fear of P38s now that Nanocom is available.

Of all of them, this is the one I miss the most:

Although this was fun, and at the time FWD was all I knew:

Yep, that sounds realistic. My VC issues felt different with random inconsistencies in steering, especially on surface changes or when turning downhill. The box is tight enough.

Have you tested the Viscous Coupling yet? An even simpler test would be to turn at full lock on that gravel and see if the front skips.
