Ah, obviously not seeing the Thor parts on the bench. I'm missing something in the sequence of posts I'm afraid.
Tony.

Mark are you still talking the blue one (that has to go)?
I'm never in favor of selling a car with lots of issues and keep my mouth shut, but nobody expects you to sell a new car.
All the work has to pay off somehow isn't it?
Tony.

Surprises me too, the difference in force needed to loosen the headbolts. Howmany miles ago was the last headjob performed by LR? I assume they are strickt in their torquevalues. On the other hand it is alloy and not a cast iron head, there is much more difference in expansion coëfficiënt, were the bolts oiled y/n ?
Doesn't look too bad, the chambers are equally black it seems.
Are you fitting ARP studs to this engine too?
Tony.

First alarming post (let my coffee get cold) 14:03, second post (problem solved) 14:15.
C'mon Mark, you need a break! (or let Marty solder new connectors to it, he's very keen in that)
Tony.

But does Nano report misfire when there is ignition but no combustion?
I trust my ears, even on a small tablet. A bad plug may also works again when engine hot.

What's the sputtering then Mark, must be some pot missing. Dit you check the plugcaps? (With a glove)

Got it! Ignition coil on its way out. At least part of it.

Funny, you mention Chinook and in the sidebar appear all adverts of Chinook vids.
As I can hear it with my android tablet in Le Havre you are missing some (one or more) cylinders.
Or else give us the answer and I will pay the ale.

When you have taken out the pollenfilters you actually can see the fans, i.e. you can see them turning wether or not. If a leaf or twig is holding the fan you can give it a push with a screwdriver.

That's too bad, not good for MB's reputation. And it's not what we experienced.
My wife's is A190 from 2000, imported from Switzerland. I picked it up on the same trip when I picked up the RR in Frankfurt.
The baby benz has done now 54000 km (the model A190 has never been imported in Holland so pretty rare here), it's an autobox and ideal for citytraffic.
When I picked it up it had been sitting for 6 months with dirty oil in the box, the solenoids were sticking and shifted not good.
A local transmission shop fitted new solenoids and flushed her, since then no problems or whatsoever. We are happy with it, use it mostly for grocery's.

Took the other half's Merc in for MoT expecting it to fail on the clunk from the front end over bumps but at least the test would show me which bit I needed to change. Failed on a knackered bottom ball joint (which is part of the lower suspension arm so a complete new arm required) and a broken rear spring.

That Merc isn't a A class by any chance?
My wife's A class was for MoT this winter and the tester paid extra attention to the rear springs, "they tend to break with all these speedbumps around" he said.

Just found out that PMs give an e-mail notification to the recipient, which is great!
Always improving...

I wouldn't go for a second hand neither, I've learned my lesson with 2 previous engines. Here in Holland I found a shop that only did the tophat liners, coreplugs and cam bearings for under €1000.-, after all I was on a budget too. Later I brought the heads for valvelapping, skimming and pressurecheck. The mains, conrodbearings, pistonrings etc. I did myself.
It's for little use for you in UK but maybe V8 Dev does some sort of 'a la carte' too to reduce costs. You know you have a good engine by then.
Tony.

Is there anything particularly special about the seals or would a universal o-ring kit from a motor factors (or even Halfrauds if they still sell such things) do?

I've read somewhere (was it on here?) to avoid the red seals as they were made of less durable material and poor fitment. One more reason not to go for general O-rings.
I'm very happy with a kit from 4x4airseals , they have different kits to suit your needs and planning what to do.
I bought this one, it is a all-in-one kit, I've only done the compressor yet though, the valveblock I will do next month.

Both nipples are above the centre line. Strange!

Have a look around you in the real world!

If those marks mean left and right thus fitted on the wrong side they should be upside down. If a PO has taken them apart and put them wrong together it is only the carrier that is mixed up. If it brakes it's fine I should say.

This sounds familiar... where did I hear this again?

Adjusting nut too tight?

There is one similarity, he's grey too.

Heavier than I remember, or maybe I'm just getting old?

Both. Yes they are heavy, yes we're getting old.
