On my '97 you only push each button once. Eg, if your code is 1234, press the 1 then the 2 then the 3 then the 4. Then the radio becomes live.

I agree about Rock Auto. For shipping to Canada they're the only company I've found that has it figured out. With every other foreign seller (not just auto parts), I always get dinged fairly exorbitant charges from the courier service for "brokerage" fees when the parts arrive. Never with Rock Auto. They must have some agreement with the couriers.
There are quite a few parts that I do have to get directly from England though. I've had great service from the English companies, but they haven't got the shipping to Canada figured out.

I tried the eBay 3D printed rebuild kit and wouldn't recommend it. Some people have been successful spending hours filing the plastic to make it fit. I filed for some time and decided no amount of filing could ever make mine fit.

My Nano works on both my GEMS P38, and the Disco 2, with the same cable. I think the P38 cable works for both, but the Disco cable doesn't work on the P38. IIRC the P38 cable costs a bit more.

I did this to mine shortly after I got it (almost 3 years ago). It was cranking slowly, battery and alternator tested fine, I had cleaned all the connections, including grounds. In the car records, the previous owners had been replacing batteries about every two years. It's still cranking over well (same battery) and I don't keep a trickle charge on it, and it sometimes sits for 5 or 6 days. It's a cheap mod and seems to work well.

Got back to it today. Timing Cover off, and it looks pretty clear that there was a good leak from the RH coolant gallery. It looks like someone previously tried to repair the same leak using the old gasket and a bunch of silicone. Nice to find something fairly definitive, as the Head Gaskets looked perfect.

I don't remember how your noise started. I had a Scout a few decades back that had a lifter that would intermittently starve for oil, collapsing and giving the engine quite a knocking sound.

Sorry guys, I like to think that I'm a reasonably good mechanic, but I'm definitely not great on computers. I'm pretty sure that the coolant wasn't getting past the head gaskets, but I'm fairly hopeless at getting photos attached.
I haven't had time over the last 2 weeks to continue to tackle this project, other than making a tool to hold the crank pully to remove it. When I get back to it I hope to find evidence of the leak under the timing cover.
Thanks for all your replies so far.

No, nothing external, it seems it all ended up in the oil.

Disc brakes dry off really quickly. After going through water with the 2A I keep a foot lightly on the brake pedal until the drums dry out. Otherwise you get horrible differential braking when you need to brake hard.

I agree, the brakes work fine, except after going through water.

I suspect they drive about the same, other than no synchro in 1st or 2nd. Otherwise they added a bit of plastic to make them look a bit more modern. Very good off road, not very good on road. I was actually very surprised at how good the P38 and Disco were off road. I always thought that LR sacrificed a lot of off road capability for the more road worthy models. Not the case at all. There are a few places where the short wheel base of the 88" will outdo the newer ones, but in general, they are as good, and sometimes better, especially where Traction Control comes to play.

I think I should take apart the front case before putting everything back together. I doubt that I've really wasted my time on HG's, with themilage on the vehicle.

No marks or grooves on the heads, or even the gaskets. I think the liners are intact.

No pressure check. I was quite negligent. I don't think I have the tools to pressure check it, it's probably something I should get? Is there any coolant leak possibility under the front case? There was definitely coolant inside the engine, the valve covers were covered in sludge.

Okay, thanks Richard. Will do.

(sorry for my ineptitude) I've been trying to post the photos from my phone. I'll try a computer.
