You can race Orangebean! :)

lol

Do they come with new pins? (just so I know)

Welcome aboard :)

How much does the local Range Rover dealer charge to read the codes?

If I were you I'd be investing in a Nanocom right now. It might not arrive before the weekend but you'll have a backup plan that you will definitely get value from if you've got a project. It's what I did!

You need the P38 version for the correct engine, here: http://www.nanocom-diagnostics.com/shop/browse

This is the link to their "What engine do I have" page http://www.nanocom-diagnostics.com/uploads/downloads/p38_engine_types.pdf

The alarm sounder might not be connected. I was in a similar situation to you with Engine Immobilised and knackered door switches in my case. Luckily the alarm had been disconnected or I would have lynched by the people living near where the car was sitting. I later hooked it up again and found that the backup battery is surprisingly resilient. Now it is charged I'd have to get some ear defenders and park it in a field before unhooking it again.

Welcome! I'm going to enjoy your thread :)

Greetings from Sunny (today) Yorkshire :)

Google do indeed upload your Maps journey data, but they make no secret of it. It's the basis for their crowd sourced congestion information which is one of the reasons I really like the product. That, and it being available for Yorkshire's favorite price :) On the upside, they're already so rich they probably wouldn't be interested in a few paltry million from the Governement ;)

I fell out of love with TomTom when I heard they'd been providing speed data to the Government so they could optimise the placement of Cash Machines.. sorry... Speed Cameras.

GPRS is General Packet Radio Service, ie a data connection over mobile phone.
There needed to be some data connection back to traffic master to make this system work, and in the original version you called Traffic Master yourself to ask about the traffic and they updated your satnav over the air. Frankly it was a crap system and not worth investigating - but it's interesting that the loom connection is still there.

Google Maps beats all on board satnav hands down (IMO).

Without a GPRS connection I don't see how that could have ever worked. You've either got GPRS in the receiver unit or there's something missing.

I do love The Duchess :) It's just that when I like a vehicle I suddenly want more of them. If I had my way (and a large lottery win) I'd probably have half a dozen E30 BMWs, Jeep Cherokees and Range Rover P38s. All shiny and ready to go...

AND we're back in the room :)

Yeah, I don't think that the value of P38s is on the rise. There's still too many around for that, even if there are fewer than before. The other problem for them is that they're regarded as the red headed step child of the Land Rover Marque. Even Disco2 owners look down on P38s, until they rust out completely at least. I really wasn't expecting to like the P38 myself but there's something rewarding about something so capable and comfortable, even if it does need a bit of watching.

I'd also say that a forum like this, with knowlegable members, will do more to keep P38s viable as a long term proposition than anything else. I've seen it happen with E30 bmws where the e30zone.co.uk provides a wealth of knowlege which keeps those old beasts on the road and it could just happen here.

I was amazed by the thickness of the carpet/foam when I saw it. I can't imagine it will dry out naturally in any reasonable time frame unless you stick the car in a paint oven or something. I suppose you could use dessicant in a dehumidifier but I think you'd be letting yourself into a lot of faff.

I was filling up the Jeep and up rolled a rather tidy looking x reg Vogue in that dark metallic red on what I think what lightstone. Turns out the guy has had it since 2005, it had a rebuilt engine after HG failure at 107k and now has 117k. He's also looking at "tidying up a couple of bits" before getting an L322. I nearly asked him what he wanted for it!
Sadly his talk of how it's now a classic and going up in price sounded the alarm bells, even if I did have the space, money, time, etc etc :)
Still, it was nice to see another good looking one :)

It's personal choice, but mine needed work on the heater flaps, motors, the temp sensor had failed and the O-rings were leaking. If you've got to go in there anyway, you may as well replace the heater matrix which is cheap and will be as gummed up as the engine radiator which probably should have been replaced by now on most P38s.
So do you go with stock or the Audi one? For me, the Audi option eliminates a known weakness with a simpler solution with less joints and potential leaks. It's pretty much impossible to re-use the rubber firewall grommet but otherwise I don't see any real downsides - as long as you use top quality hose.

Don't sell! Better the devil you know :)
Although, if you're secretly hankering after more problems to solve, I guess there's no rational argument for you to keep it.
