Hello Gents.

Me again......................

I'v been flaying around with my Sunroof AKA Showerunit.

I've fixed a bulging seal, which was due in part to the sunroof frame corroding and causing the seal to lift away from the glass, the frame aswell.

I have since sealed it up,,

enter image description here

One thing i have noticed is, i can push the sunroof down with my hand when it is "closed" it springs back to position but should i be able to move it?

Odd Q i know..

Just wondering.

Hiya gents.

I see most of ya'll run LPG on your P38s and I was wondering if you'd happen to know what the emissions reading was on your particular vehicle..

I have a particularly stubborn chap on another forum who cannot seem to understand how an LPG V8 can be as clean or cleaner than his Diesel P38.

H

I've seen a few threads on coolant temps...

I haven't hooked my 4.6 up to my reader yet to check coolant temps..

What would be an acceptable range to expect?

Everything to do with the cooling system is new..

Just as precautionary maintenance!!

H

Sat for 2 years

And flew threw an MOT like a champ!!

love it!!

ahhh!!

Getting this thing ready for an MOT the dreaded "gearbox fault" pops up on the dash and i lose the lights in the gearshift, sport has disappeared and the gear notification in the dash has disappeared..

It changes gear but at over 2500rpm instead of the usual 1700 and it doesn't kick down..

Any ideas gents?

Next week will be judgement day, whether she passes or fails..

Known faults are...

ABS TC light are intermittent, i believe it is because of a lack of pressure in the ABS system, i will try and leave the pump to run till' it cuts on the day..

Gearbox fault is another the Sport and manual modes don't work and it won't change below 2500rpm so i need to look into that.

Cold start idle is all over the shop, ok when hot..

Exhaust is rough..

etc etc

we'll see!!

H

A little pixie has emerged.

She is throwing up a TPS fault and the gearbox is refusing to change gear below 2600rpm, the sport and manual modes don't work either..
I haven't looked on RAVE or the world wide net yet, however could they be linked?

Cheers H

Just found this in the P38's history...

A tad eggspensive!!

LOL

The above name i'm known by on other forums hence the name LOL

I thought i'd document my ownership and "pain" with you gents, coz it is Thursday and i start a horrible day of work tomorra!!

The Story starts in July 2017 just after passing my test my immediate family wanted me to get something frugal cheap to insure and of course, because i was a new driver something "small" and easy to handle!!

I spent hours looking through Ebay - Autotrader - Gumtree etc for a cheap car, however my mind kept creeping back to big saloons and 4x4's as you do when you're daydreaming on the internet.

There were two cars that i kept mulling over

1 was a Green 1987 Jaguar XJ40 3.6 Sovereign

2 Was a cheap Range Rover P38 V8.

Both were in my budget, and weirdly both were insurable,

I was being asked daily on what i was going to look at, and on "the day" i resigned to tell them that I was going to look at a Mini LOL

Anyway the Jaguar was a complete train wreck, far too much work to bring it up to a respectable daily driver and much more to get it looking good!!

So that was a no go and a waste of fuel!!

Next car "p38" was located in Worcestershire a 75mi trip from where i was, me and my co-driver decided to go down there and have a look..

Naturally it was going dark, and in the light of "dusk" it looked "ok"

LOL

Anyway it drove fine, sounded fine and had no petrol in it!!

So i shook hands at £cough and we were on our way home!!

The first stop was to a petrol station "naturally" where £145 worth of super unleaded was put into the massive tank

And we drove home, a 70mi trip at an average of 19.7 MPG which wasn't too bad considering!!

Pictures from the trip are AWOL but i do have this one from when I got her home!!

enter image description here

those will do for the into on this particular money pit..

more to come later....

H

I went out to the P38 today and saw a small swimming pool in the floor where the loom goes and my floor mat was saturated, water is leaking from above the dash and on to the carpet..
The worst it's ever been, prolly thanks to this storm "ciara" we recently had, rain has been relentless.

I've sealed up the pollen filters and everything under the scuttle - Drains are clear.
Duck taped the shagged sunroof up too.

so that sorts out the 2 most common areas,,

are there any other places for water to get in?

Cheers gents.

Patience is getting then regarding this water ingress, i can deal with ruined engines and major components, but small things like this really wind me up!!

H

Assuming you've fixed all the foibles and you were tempted to do something to your P38 what would it be?

I'm kind of dry regarding things, prolly my lack of motivation LOL

H

I find myself wondering how you all shift your autos,

The people in the know say you should come to a complete stop before going from D-R or vice versa.
Myself in the 4,000 miles i've had her i myself have never really come to a complete stop, usually 1mph in either direction,

It seems to "go in" smoother when it is moving slightly..

H

MPG's in forum Opening time

On my lazy days i tend to browse forums looking at hot topics.

In this case I tend to see quite a few "what does yours do to the gallon" threads.
on these i find seemingly identical cars doing completely different figures.

Mine being a 2001 Thor 4.6. Over 3000mi it did an average of 18.7 on petrol mixed A road driving as for Gas i dunno it never worked!!! ;) LOL

Just curious to see what ya'll get.

More of a question of curiosity.

How does a P38 handle with springs is it as drastic as some might suggest?

Not that i want Springs you understand..

H

Do any of my fellow P38 owners undercoat their 'erm...... P38?

I was thinking of doing mine, as she has 0 rust, i'd like to keep it that way.

I have Waxoyl black..

H

Just curious, I noted with a Mann Filter that the Oil pressure light would always take 1-2 seconds to disappear.
Since fitting a Bosch Filter the light doesn't even flicker..

Odd maybe, its the design of the filter?

What do filters do you all prefer?

I've seen a few "what have you done" threads on some other Forums, so i thought i'd start one on here.

Today and tbh since last week i've seen trying to deal with the water ingress.

And have been playing round with the interior and in particular the leather seats, trying to get them clean..

enter image description here

when i picked it up... ^^^b

After 3 years and alot of scrubbing!

enter image description here

'tis getting better!

And all back together, Beige carpet wouldn't of been my first choice if i had spec'd it!! ;)

enter image description here

Carpet is alot less Yellow!!

But it is ridiculously easy to get dirty again..

I don't think the PO had ever heard of mats LOL

H

My old P38's Air suspension seems to have a mind of its own..

1 She sits cock eyed at any height, much higher on the OS than the NS.

2 The compressor is running constantly, and gets so hot it can't be touched.

3 When using the height control button, when raising OR lowering the lights flash, and it takes forever to either deflate or inflate the bags..

4 If you set her in "wade" mode and then shut her off she'll lower down by quite a degree.

The odd thing is..

You can leave her a month on any setting and she won't sag, i don't think there is a leak,.

It's like she's constantly trying to self level..

Any ideas H

Is it the bottom of these and the pollen filter lids that need sealing, usually?

enter image description here

Or is it under this, there seems to be a rope like seal under there which seems to be in good nick?

enter image description here

Can't take the screws out so rather limited TBH!! ;)

H

The Old beast has been sat a while, and needs some work,

Being the Guru's and lets be honest Geniuses you are,

What would you refurb/replace to make it reliable?

she has knocking on the door of 130k.

Henry..
